I have bought this http://r.ebay.com/g95heu ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/T-Mobile_myTouch_4G_Slide ) on Ebay, and placed my NZ Vodafone SIM card in it.

Calls and SMS work OK. Internet works only via Wi-Fi, not via the SIM card. I have tried both my regular Vodafone SIM card, and the data-only SIM card taken out of my Vodafone hotspot.

Is this phone supposed to work with Vodafone in NZ?

What APN are you using? Some of these handsets have hidden APNs and can be a nightmare to change

Like JohnR has said what APN are you using?

If you haven't configured one yet, It is very likely that is your cause of no data.

Check Here http://community.vodafone.co.nz/t5/Mobiles-and-Tablets/Vodafone-NZ-APNs/td-p/108036 for the generic instructions how to set Android devices APN settings (Keeping in mind some options maybe re worded by the original carrier).

The internet APN should be set to ' vodafone '

Hmmmmm I have not touched anything under "VPN"; under "VPN settings" it just says "Add VPN".

Similarly I haven't touched anything under "Access Point Names" and there is nothing set there. I have the ability to program a new APN, but don't know what data I should input.

Thanks for answering my cry for help, John; I knew I can count on you :-)

APN not VPN they are very different,

You need to add a new access point using the APN ' vodafone '

You will also want to add the APN for MMS / PXT which can be a little more complex to get going if you miss out one of fields when setting the internet APN
