Whenever one particular person (whose number is on my Contacts List) calls me from her cell phone, my phone rings but instead of identifying the caller my phone (Galaxy S3) shows "Private Number Calling". Neither of us has (knowingly) done anything to cause this! Can anyone suggest what's happening, or (better still) what can be done to fix the situation? Any other caller who is on my Contacts list shows up their name correctly, as expected. I don't know whether any one else this person calls has the same problem.

I would think her phone account is set to show that - she has to call her provider to get that changed.

Nothing to do with your phone itself.

It is either a setting they have changed on their phone (in the call settings), a setting made by their provider at their request, or they're prefixing the call with (from memory) 0197.

Some phones have the ability to change whether you show your caller ID or not in the phone settings.

Everytime my father calls me it comes up with Private Caller, I must get him to check settings in his iPhone (I am using a Nexus 4)

What type of phone is it? It's quite easy to change on the phone itself.

Her phone is a Galaxy Ace 2 using Telecom, mine is an S3 with 2 degrees. I've checked settings on both phones and can't find anything that would explain this. The mystery remains!

No big mystery really, just get them to call their carrier and unset privacy.

Tell her to:

Go to Your Telecom (over 3G) or http://m.telecom.co.nz
Manage Services
Manage caller id restriction
Turn off
Submit

Hey presto! Should be working now :)

You (or the person calling you) are going to have to do some basic troubleshooting to start eliminating the problem areas.

Start with calling someone else from the same phone - does the caller ID details get passed through OK?

If it doesn't then the problem is likely either with the caller's phone, or their telco. Check the outgoing caller ID settings both on the phone, and with the telco.

If it does send the details to others, but just not to you, check if there is a setting to restrict caller ID to some contacts only.

Alternatively, look at the number they are calling you on - check it's not an old number that is forwarding or redirecting to your current number and not passing CLI details.

I have an older original galaxy ace (dont laugh) - its android 2.3.?
Under settings/Call Settings/Additional settings there is an option 'Caller ID' - it looks like you can use the following;

Network default
Hide Number
Show Number

Id start by looking at those settings on your friends phone - certainly android has the facility to withhold the callers number.

That's also where it is on my Galaxy S4 and where it is on most Android phones.  I know that it's certainly in iPhone settings somewhere.

Thank you robjg63 for giving some detail in your response :-) I was unaware of that particular range of settings - Call Settings is not an option listed in my main Settings menu. I was trying to solve the problem by starting with Contacts, not even discovering Call Settings until I started with the phone set to Keypad. It turned out her phone was set to Network Default under 'Caller ID'. I changed this to 'Show Number', which fixed the problem.
My phone, also set to Network Default for the corresponding setting, doesn't create the same problem for anyone else as far as I know.
Thanks again.
