Hey guys, i'm wondering if i buy the Telecom y300 (http://store.telecom.co.nz/mobile/personal/phone-details/telecom-y300-black/our-picks) can i put my Vodafone sim card in and use it? Will there be any restrictions for using the vodafone sim?

NEED TO KNOW URGENTLY, as i am thinking about buying it today.

will afaik it will only work on the 2100mhz band on vodafone so if you go into a 900mhz area it may not work correctly.

I have a feeling they may be locked. I have a much older Telecom T-Stick, and it is locked (wouldn't work on Telstra in AU).

Can you not get a Vodafone one?

No phone not locked.

The T-Stick would need it's APN changed to work on Telstra AU..

Sounds like you will be limited on 3G coverage as the handset does not support 3G on 900Mhz

It depends what you are using it for. In most major towns and cities you will have 3G coverage. In more rural areas you will fall back to GSM which will be fine for calling & texting but suck for data (about a similar speed to dial up and you won't be able to get simultaneous voice and data)

You can check the 2G (GSM) and 3G coverage here http://www.vodafone.co.nz/network/coverage/. 3G extended coverage is not supported by the phone so don't tick that tab (or maybe do tick it and see what you will be missing out on and whether that is important you you.

ok thankyou, so i checked and around my area the 2g and 3g is good connection. So will it be a right choice to buy the Y300 and use my Vodafone Sim?

AND, all i need the phone for is calling and texting, mainly texting

Well, i already have a Nokia 100, and ive had it for a year, but i want to upgrade to a better phone, and i have found this one for a good price, so will this be a good phone for texting and calling considering its a Telecom but i'm using soing to be using my Vodafone sim?

It'll be fine for you then, you can also get apps like 'WhatsApp' for even more texting

Well it will do SMS and calling just fine just remember whatsapp is not SMS as such it's IM

Would really not recommend using a smartphone without 900MHz 3G if at all avoidable. So much work has been done on expanding 3G coverage using 900MHz, you'll get the best experience if you have a device that conforms to network spec. Texting is fine over 2G, but voice calls are better on 3G, and (of course) you're looking at the difference between dial-up & broadband data speeds with 2G vs. 3G.

Better option mobile phone to take advantage of the 900MHz = Vodafone Smart mini at $109
(or $79 if you don't mind having a network-locked handset)
