What are folks opinions as to the best way to back up my contacts on my phone. They are at present stored on the sim. I can export all those to the phone and thus have a "double up" of all contacts. I understand that I can back up via Kies - I do not have that on my PC. I understand that I can also back up via Gmail. However, that requires that I "give" my cellphone number to Google.
What other options are there for back up of contacts? Is it just as easy to write my contacts details down and file the paperwork in a place I know I can access readily. Or, am I just being paranoic? about possibility of loss of contacts/details?

You are worried about giving your mobile number to Google?

Do you not have a Google account on your phone for the Play Store etc? It automatically backs up the contacts on your phone to the cloud.

Thanks "johnr" - guess you mean I should have no worries on that score. Is that right. Google does give assurances as to the security of the information that I supply.

To "bradstewart" - I do have a Google account on my phone (the Samsung). I set up a Google Account two years ago when I got a Nexus 7. The account that is on my phone - via Settings and Accounts and sync settings - appears as
xxxxxx@gmail.com.I have "tapped" on Manage accounts (the account name), then on Sync Contacts (the sync symbol turns and turns then stops. Then on checking on mail.google.com and entering I cannot see the contacts that (should) I understand appear in my "Contacts" list.
So, am I doing something wrong. Or does it take time to appear in the list?
Further help appreciated.

Contacts are not synced to Gmail. Go to http://contacts.google.com and sign in to check if they have have synced. You can also add contacts in here and they'll sync back to your phone.

Hi "brad".
Tried all that. Does not work.
Are we at cross purposes here. Seems to me that the Contacts (opened up in Gmail or seen via contacts.google.com - as you advised) are and will always be email addresses.
I wish to store - off my cell phone - my phone contacts, ie names and phone numbers.
Sync is on on my phone but no details (that are on my phone - names and phone numbers) appear in the Contacts in Google (accessed via Gmail or via contacts.google.com).
Any other ideas?
Maybe I should try Kies and store my cellphone contacts on my home PC - just making sure it is kept backed up?

No it stores more than email addresses. It's possible in the contacts app any ones on your phone are being synced to a Samsung account instead.

God knows where in the Samsung "ether" my cellphone contacts have gone then!!

Think I shall give up on this one.

I note from various other forums etc out there that lots of folk have never been able to see their cellphone contacts migrate to their Google Account.

Thanks for the good efforts tho.

Google contacts stores email addresses, phone numbers, physical addresses, etc. You may not have it set up properly, may have turned sync off, etc. That's the best way to do it, just let google back it up. You're just one of 100 million accounts, even if it's not secure unless there's something really special about you or your contacts no-one but you will ever see them. Security by obscurity works sometimes.
