I had been waiting patiently for LG to deliver the promised update to my LG 3D Max. But it's now 15 months overdue...and I'm satisfied it's never coming.
Thanks, LG.
Aside: I'll buy a Google-backed Nexus LG, but I won't be buying any more LG-backed phones. They have orphaned a perfect two out of two high-end phones on me over the past 2 years.
Anyway....I went to XDA-Developers and found an Android 4.x ROM known as "Thundersnap 2.3" from a dev who calls himself "Eklovya". He's based in New Delhi. He said his ROM has everything working while it was clear that the other two ROMs for this phone have "issues".
But he wanted US$40 as a "donation" so he can buy a better PC and continue his development work.
Whatever......
I sent the money and he sent me the links and instructions....and I got on with it.
Rooting the LG 3D Max is a doddle. Full instructions on XDA.
Installing the Clockwork Mod recovery after rooting the phone was an utter doddle....two commands in BTEP...and done.
Flashing the ROM using the touch-enabled CWM 6.0.2.3 was about as easy as it gets.....ever. Yes, I backed up the original (rooted) stock 2.3 system. I have a return path.
The result? The result is pretty awesome. My LG 3D Max is now running Android 4.0.4 and all the 3D functionality (cameras and display) is preserved. Even better, the Android 4.0 version of the video camera includes a stabilisation feature. Most welcome, that!
The phone works fine. Txts work fine. 3G works fine. All good....and the phone is quite snappy now.
So if you have one of these phones or come across one in your travels.....there is a way to upgrade them to Android 4.0 if it hasn't been already....and the result is very good.
