It's only since I got my S5, that my wifes complaining about the slow nature of the S4 camera has got me to pay attention. Its basically unusable in it's current configuration (Stock), we can't get action shots of the kids as it takes so long to focus. Are there settings to optimize it? The S2 was much better according to her!

Yes I think you have said that a lot.

The S5 is perfect, the S3 and S2 took great shots, the S4 for some reason gives us a blurry photo 5/6 times and the time it takes to focus is terrible.

My wife and I both have S4s, hers running stock and mine running NamelessROM, which is based on CyanogenMod. She keeps telling me that she wants my camera because it takes better shots that hers. Mine have a far better chance of coming out clear.

The camera hardware is obviously capable of taking a decent shot. There's just something not quite right about Samsung's camera app. There's no real excuse for it, which is part of the reason why I'll also be leaving Samsung when I next change phone.

My S4 seems slightly faster than my S3 at focusing, and certainly can capture at a higher rate. Is it stock? Does it generally seem responsive, or is it laggy?

Sorry, but the S5 is not perfect. It's slow to wake up, slow to boot, slow to start programs. Get another high end Android handset and after a week you will see the difference. This applies to previous models as well.

I have.

Yes i have :). I also have the same issue. It seems to only do it when light is a little lower than normal. It will focus perfectly then bang when you take the picture it will be blurry or very grainy.

I strongly disagree with your assessment, your unit would need to be faulty for all that to be true, it goes against every review and against comparisons I have run against the Xperia and HTC Flagships as recently as the last two weeks.

Re slow to wake up, I have noticed this occasionally, but I am running a non stock launcher and a lock screen addon. Do you have sVoice double press disabled?

I was also referring to just the camera, meaning the camera on the S5 takes very good photos much much faster than the S4.

I like the HTC m8 a lot, but the camera isn't comparable, and the real estate taken in place of a physical button seems like a crime to me. It's also not as nice to hold as the M7 in my opinion as well.

I am wondering if perhaps there is a fault with the wife's s4, both my staff have s4's and both say they are happy with them.

You shouldn't have to disable something to get satisfactory performance out of your phone should you?

/me sighs

Responses like this drive me crazy.

It's a feature, designed for convenience. I know a lot of people who would gladly swap the very slight lag for the quick access to this feature. To me I'd rather not use it, and would rather have a faster home button function. It's all about choices.

I am not the only one saying it is slow. I complained about this in the S5 thread and BradStewart seemed to confirm other reports exist. But then it is off topic so I am out of here.

John and a few others in the business had same comments. (Mum works at VF too, She in sales, most of them got one and switched back to the iPhopne 5/5s)

I'd be interested in continuing this in the S5 thread should you so wish, I am actually pretty impressed in the S5, I didn't expect much since I wasn't that impressed in the S4 over the S3, but the S5 is quite decent.

It's not impossible as with the camera issue I am reporting here, that more than 1 person could have a fault with a phone that exhibits the same symptoms. I am sure if it were widespread, reviews would be scathing.
