Just had an interesting call from Radio Research, who after talking for a while want me to take part in radio research by adding an app to my smart phone. The app is supposed to hear what music is being played in your car or in your home or where-ever you are.
It listens to hidden codes in the music which is then transmitted weekly to the agency for analysis.
It only detects music that has the codes embedded and nothing else.
Has anyone heard of this type of audience research. Here is a url http://nz.ipsosmediacell.com/Introduction.html that explains how it works. Incidentally they pay for your time. Not sure I want to do this but the idea of how it works is intriguing. Certainly an improvement on the old diaries

According to what I can find on Internet it is used around the world and it can only hear music that has the signal embedded and does not react to voice or any music without the code, Which is interesting in that it would tend to exclude National Radio which is mostly voice. Though that is understandable they are more interested in commercial stations I would guess.

I'd still be reluctant....   the more I read on the site, the more annoying that app seems to me - must keep phone on and with you at all times, must be online, if its not theyll track you down and ask why not. There goes any privacy - go out of town for a couple of days with no coverage and you end up with these guys calling you asking why you're not online. "None of your business" would be my response....  OK, Im probably looking at this from the extreme POV but it can happen :)

I usually dont wear a tin foil hat but this would convince me to... ;)
