They decided to put some useless push notifications.

And now, when I run the app I get a wonderful message saying that "google play services is not installed, contact the manufacturer" and the app closes.

I don't know why it's required since many apps work just fine without gapps (obviously without push notifications working). As I do not wish to have google play services installed (I use OmniROM + NOGAPPS) I had to revert to the previous version (long live nightly TitaniumBackup jobs).

It worked for a while, then I got the warning "Update available, get it now - or later". The later worked and now it simply said I must update. So I had to uninstall it. I'll use the web interface in firefox (although I don't have the pay to phone contact which I only used a few times a year anyway).

Sigh. I'm wondering how much life AOSP will have left and when it will go (completely) closed source.

While I'm sure they can't do anything about this immediately, it'd certainly be worthwhile raising this with them via either Facebook, Twitter or G+ for consideration in future versions. Include your phone make, model and the exact version of the ROM you're using. The social media team are pretty on to it, and will ensure the feedback is passed to the relevant team. Would be worthwhile leaving this feedback in the Google Play Store, too - chuck in a low-star rating for good measure.

Except he's said he doesn't have GApps installed, which means no Play Store, or any of the supporting apps and services. Personally, I'd go with "Well, you're using a custom build with key functionality unavailable.. bad luck", unless of course ASB is making the app available via means other than Play, in which case it should be supported.

Greenify is good for killing background tasks, which prevents stupid notifications. You're in the 1% with a custom ROM (I am too, but with G Apps) so while your request may be reasonable it's probably not economic to make it work for the 10 people in your situation if it's going to cost $100K in development and testing  - which is maybe on the high side but not unreasonable for corporate development if you include business case, research, implementation, testing (multiple levels, deployment), etc.

If you run a custom ROM you should be aware of the potential limitations and also lack of support for your ROM by app developers.

They cater to what will give them the most downloads, since you're a special case you're always able to navigate to the ASB Mobile webpage or install G-Apps.

It will be requiring Google Play services for a reason.

Long press notification, click 'app info', stop notifications for the app (although may not help in this particular instance).

Blackberry users will also be unable to use the App if it uses Google Play Services. BB10 can install and run Android apps but not those using the Google services.
