I understand that he Moto E is running a fairly clean install of Android. When I  wake up the phone by swipping the home screen (or with a pin code) - it boots staight into Google - rather than the "desktop" view.

I've googgled but I can't find a  solution to this- I'm maybe using the wrong terms though - screen shot attached

That could be "google now". I uninstalled it because I found it annoying. There's probably something in the settings that will let you set your home screen, but I don't have stock google to work it out with sorry. My Wife's Moto G doesn't do this though, it's almost the same phone.

A swipe up from the software home button will launch Google Now from any screen. Dare say this was what was happening. :)

You got it! I've always swipped from the bottom - and  I was still getting the google search even without Google Now!
