Hi

Using a Samsung S4, and Thunderbird email on my computer.

If I download emails on my PC then I can not download on my phone.

But what settings do I use so I can download on my phone and it is not seen on my PC (which it currently is)

Thanks

Bernard

If you use IMAP then the contents of your mail store and the message state (read/unread) is sync'd between all devices. If you view an email on your PC you can view it on your phone, but it'll be marked as read unless you manually mark it unread, and vice versa.

Can you please restate your question a bit more precisely please? It's not entirely clear what you want to know.

Sorry will try to be a bit clearer.

If I download emails on my PC it syncs it as you say and that email can no longer be viewed on my phone.

However.

If I download a email to my phone it is still live on my PC and can be downloaded, at which point it vanishes from my phone.

So what I want to know is.

How can I make my phone the main email so when it is downloaded to my phone it can not then be also downloaded by my PC and therfore vanish from my phone.

Hope that makes sense now. :)

If you download an email using your PC and you can't view it on your phone then you have your PC set up as POP, not IMAP. If you're unsure post a screen shot of the Thunderbird accounts area for that account. Tools -> account settings -> server setting.

Suggest you double check both are on IMAP and delete from either device, with neither being the master.

You've set it up wrong. pop.vodafone.co.nz and imap.vodafone.co.nz resolve to the same IP, but you're using the wrong protocol - POP instead of IMAP. POP is port 110, IMAP 143, SMTP 25, one server can do the lot. You just have to talk to it correctly.

Delete or disable your POP account in Thunderbird and set up an IMAP account. Same credentials, or if you can work out how change the account type from POP to IMAP - and I don't meant the server name, I mean the protocol.

This is really simple stuff. You're just using the wrong protocol. It's user error nothing technological.

Okay it worked ....BUT, in the processes of changing it to IMAP I deleted the old account and created a new account.

For some reason I have now lost all of my inbox, but strangely not my outbox or my deleted emails.

So is there a way to retrieve the contents of my inbox ?

Thanks

Ah yeah, if you delete your account you'll lose your email. Editing it or just stopping the email checks would've been better. You should restore that folder from your backups, as once an email has been removed from an email server it's gone.

Go back to Tools --> Account Settings --> Server Settings

At the bottom of the dialogue box you will find what your 'local' directory is - you may need to hit the Browse button to see the full path. It's usually something like C:\Users\{your username}\AppData\Roaming\Thunderbird\Profiles\xxxxxxxx.default (where xxx... is a string of random characters). I've set mine up to go to a NAS and make all stored emails accessible from any computer on my network so can't quite remember the exact default structure. Anyway, you may find your old mailbox with the emails downloaded from the previous account via POP is still here. If so you shouldl be able to import them.

In respect of putting images into your posts, generally (not always, but generally) you need to upload them first. Click on your username near the top left of the forum pages. The option to upload files is at the bottom of the first (Your Profile >>) section. Once uploaded, the image/s will have some BBCode produced for you to copy and paste into your posts.

I have found the file/s you are talking about and I presume the one I want is INBOX at 109kb, there is also a INBOX.msf at 4kb
, now how do I import them ?

Thanks

I think MSF is the index. Try this.

Also, you need to look at your backup system I think. Any email you've downloaded from the server that you want to keep should be backed up. Mailstore Home is one good way.
