Hi all, I have an issue with the OS not recognising my phone.

I have a nexus 5 and it was interacting normally with the OS up until I used my PC's hot swap port to get some files off an old hard drive.

Since putting on that hard drive (and removing it), windows doesn't recognise my phone when it is connected. The phone knows it is connected, and other computers (e.g. my work PC) recognise when the phone is connected, but not my main desktop. The phone does show up in safely remove media box on the start menu, but not in file explorer (see attached screenshot) and I can't move files on/off the phone.

I've tried putting the hard drive back on and labelling it with a different drive letter, but my phone is still unrecognised - any thoughts to fix this?

I originally posted this on the Windows forum and was told to repost here.

Try the app "USB Mass Storage", it changes the USB mode of the phone. Can help. Otherwise just use AirDroid or Dropbox to get files on and off. Only time I plug my phone in is when I'm putting on a new third party firmware - usually use wireless charging too.

Unfornately Nathan, your solution didn't work. After many attempts to find out the right USB port and repeatedly uninstalling and reinstalling by keyboard mouse etc, I managed to uninstall and reinstall the phone - which went straight back to how it was - not visible as a drive.

I've put dropbox on my phone, but the app you suggested requires a rooted phone, and mine isn't. Plus, I'd really like to get the phone back to the way it was so I can take advantage of automated syncing of podcasts etc.

Didn't realise it needed root sorry. I suggest you work around it, Dropbox, the app "dropsync", Airdroid2, etc. As I said I don't plug my phone into my computer other than for custom firmware updates.

FWIW my stock N5 connects to my Windows PC and appears as in Windows explorer just fine, and I can copy files backwards/forwards etc once I've PIN unlocked my N5

Does it work on another PC?  (ie is the PC or the N5)

It works fine on other PCs, so yeah i think it is the pc that is the issue (hence my explaining about the drive issue I had with that PC).
