On another thread discussing messaging apps, Pushbullet was strongly promoted as a must have android app. Pushbullet is a free app that allows users to seamlessly share information between their android devices and PCs in real time, including the ability to receive android notifications directly via your PC. It looks absolutely great, but I have reservations …

I am reluctant to install Pushbullet as the app requires my personal data be passed through the Pushbullet servers to enable the device/contact sharing to be completed. The thing is, I'm not sure I want to give access to my detailed personal data to a company I know nothing about. Yes, I'm in boots and all with Google - they probably know about as much about me as god, but you have to lie down with their particular devil if you want to use android. But how many other private companies should I open up my life to? For eg. I’ve stopped using whatsapp , and do not use FB messenger, as Facebook is one company I’m keen to limit my personal info sharing with.

So back to Pushbullet. What do we know about them? Their app is very sophisticated - and free, so I am wary. We are required to pass our personal details and daily activities through their servers – servers which can be sold at any time, thus passing our personal history from one company to the next. Do we care, or is this just the world now?

I had an interesting push bullet experience today.  I left my phone at home by accident which was a bit annoying as my wife and I generally communicate via text while she's home with the kids during the holidays.  Anyway I got to work and was working away as per normal when I got a message on my browser (something from Genesis energy saying my bill was ready blah blah).  Suddenly I remembered even though I'd left my phone at home I could still send and receive text messages via pushbullet.  My wife had emailed me telling me I'd left my phone at home and I texted her back saying "I know" - she was so confused LOL

In short I can't comment on what access I granted pushbullet (I should've paid more attention there :-) but the it has proved to be extremely convenient.

I have now just received a missed call notification (via pushbullet) from the garage doing my WOF!  This is brilliant.

This must sound like an advert for pushbullet but I have to say it has proved very useful today.

I have AirDroid installed and while it's a product with more features, its notification mirroring and remote access to Contacts is very buggy. I am giving Pushbullet a try, but I'd like to see an easier SMS management.

Another pushbullet user here, been using it for almost a year.
Definitely recommended, especially if you have multiple devices android or otherwise.

The ability to mute certain notifications is very useful.
There are a few glitches here and there with the notifications on PC but overall a keeper app for me.

Just got on the pushbullet bandwagon. God dam it's a great app and extension for webrowsers. Text message pops up, no need to fart around getting the phone, click the notification and reply quick as you like. Browsing the web and find something you want to share with someone, need to bother with emailing it to them, just open up the app and send it off as a text. Piece of piss.

freitasm I ditched AirDroid. Im using MightyText at the moment and finding it very useful as I can respond to texts (from my laptop) even when I leave my phone at my desk.

MightyText looks interesting - I guess it just sends the txt to their servers (or your PC directly) using WiFi? PB looks similar. Interested in data and privacy concerns.

As far as privacy I think Pushbullet is only given as much information as Google sees fit, i.e. it is allowed to read notifications but not body of email etc
