I've plugged the phone in via USB and found a folder called GT-I9300.

But it looks like there's nothing in any of the folders.  I want to copy a audio file
made with it's voice recorder. It shows in the phone under "Recorded files" and 'Voice 001'.

Any help appreciated. PC is XP but I can use Win7 machine if that'd be any better.
The phone does have a memory card.

Can you not do without samsung Kies? Just had a look at the requirements

You dont need Kies. But you may have to unlock your phone to see anything on the device - this is a feature of Android (not Samsung specific AFAIK).

Success. I did downlaod Kies but tit wouldn't work...  something about a missing driver.
Then I fluked some way to "USB PC Connection" on the phone and switched there from Camera (PTP) to Media Device (MTP)
and eveything came up in explorer.  The audio was in amr format but found a convertor via google to make it a wav.

If you were on camera, thats why you would have nothing come up on the computer.

MTP should let you see everything, but it is super super slow.

There isn't one over usb because it can't support mass storage like the older androids did.

Best to send over wifi I found. Many file managers support connecting to windows shares and bulk copying.
