Wow, not the most attractive phone in the world but the specs and the price are VERY impressive.

ZE551ML (4GB) – NT$8,990 ($290USD)

  • 2.3 GHz Intel Atom Z3580
  • 5.5-inch 1080p display
  • 4GB RAM
  • 32GB internal memory
  • 13MP rear camera & 5MP front camera
  • 3,000 mAh battery

Might look at one of these to replace my Nexus 5.

I had the 5 the intel core wasn't really ready for prime time IMO. And the firmware updates are ... ridiculously slow?

The Z3580 should be significantly improved over the Z2580/Z2560 found in the Zenfone 5 - higher clocked, more cores, 64bit, newer architecture etc.

Seems midrange this year is going to have some very good valued choices. I'd be interested in the 4GB version Zenfone 2 as a 2nd device to my daily driver, this or the 5.5" version of the Alcatel Idol 3 which is similarly inexpensive for the specs - 5.5" 1080p, 2GB RAM, 32GB Storage, JBL stereo front facing speakers, 64bit Snapdragon 615 Octocore, 7.4mm thick, 2910mAh battery, under US$250. Or possibly a Oneplus Two...

Sounds good. Are you planning on importing? I'd be interested in getting one at cost or near cost.

It looks pretty good, where can you get it from?

I have a friend of a friend in Taiwan looking into it for me.  Seeing if it's in English etc.

I got the 5 overpriced on TM direct from Taiwan. It was English or at least it can be set up as one quite easily.

I've usually purchased Taiwan-only/limited release ASUS stuff from Ebay. This phone packs quite a wallop for the price.

I can't see it on Ebay yet unfortunately.

I just got word from my Taiwanese contact that it's not out for a few more weeks.  Hopefully get one then.

There are a couple of sellers there (can't recall names off the top of my head) who get things at release/slightly ahead of a lot of other places. Set up an Ebay alert if you want first option on them :)

So there are a few sellers on eBay but the reasonably priced ones are all the 2GB/1.8GHz model. The 4GB one is selling for~ $1000NZD which seems a bit of a rip-off

Looks like Amazon, via a reseller, has them listed:

http://www.amazon.com/ASUS-ZenFone-ZE551ML-UNLOCKED-FACTORY/dp/B00VTTAZRY/ref=sr_1_11?s=wireless&ie=UTF8&qid=1428560632&sr=1-11&keywords=asus+zenfone+2+ze

If you want to go down the super early adopter path :)
