They have also shown the Huawei P8 Max, a 6.8" version of the P8. It certainly is a large phone and probably not everyone's taste but could be a good business tool if you only want to carry around one device.

If that camera is as good as they claim it to be, it'll capture some insane photos.

Girlfriend has the P6, she really likes the design and gets quite a few compliments and questions about, a bit slow compared to any normal flagship, but it's cheap.  P7 is $399 and only out for less than a year (I think).

She would love to get her hands on this I think

These look like nice phones. I like the attention to detail Huawei is taking.
The feature where you can direct movies with footage from several cameras is fantastic, and I can see this being copied before long.

I actually quite like Huawei phones. They typically slim, light, have great screens, decent cameras, fast SOC's. They're robust (had one take a swim but its all working again now, except for the accelerometer), and the customisations they do for their android ROMS is actually useful. They have a features added to the ROM that cleans up cache files to free up space, and a hugely expanded battery info feature, that detect background apps with high power usage.

Pretty sure they have another feature where you can limit access privileges to apps in a fine grained manner. Its like an app privilege firewall. Don't want this app to know your GPS location? fine you switch off that privilege for that specific app. Don't want this app to access your contacts? same thing.

Just received... Release tomorrow (17th July):

The Huawei P8 will launch in New Zealand on Friday, July 17, offering stunning design and intuitive technology.

To celebrate the launch of the new smartphone, Huawei is offering NZ P8 owners free screen repair due to accidental breakage within 12 months of purchase.

Continuing the minimalist design of previous generations in the P series, the Huawei P8 embodies elegance and craftsmanship with cutting edge technology. Highlights include:

  • 6.4mm slim all-metal unibody design
  • World’s first four-colour RGBW 13MP imaging sensor for the rear camera featuring optical image stabilization and a DSLR-level independent image processor
  • 5.2” FHD display with class-leading 78.3% screen-to-bezel ratio
  • 8MP front camera
  • New Kirin 930 64-bit Octa-Core chipset boosts performance and battery life
  • 3 GB of RAM
  • 2,680mAh battery to get even power users through a full day of use
  • Signal+ dual antenna technology to ensure consistently strong connectivity
The Huawei P8 is crafted from a single block of aluminium in a process that takes 810 minutes for each unit and includes diamond shape blasting to create a finely textured surface. The 5.2” FHD display is covered with Gorilla Glass and offers a best-in-class screen-to-bezel ratio. The Huawei P8 is also incredibly thin at just 6.4mm with a camera which sits perfectly flush.

Huawei is consistently ranked amongst the industry’s most reliable brands according to independent reporting. The Huawei P8, with its metal unibody construction, is the company’s strongest device to date. However, accidents can still happen that may result in breakage. To ensure peace of mind, Huawei is offering a free screen repair for all registered P8 smartphones for a full year from date of purchase.

Huawei NZ Head of Devices, Steven Shi, said the offer was a thank you to the company’s NZ customers.
“We believe the difference between ordinary and extraordinary is that little bit extra. While the Huawei P8 is extremely strong, screens can still get damaged. The holy grail is an unbreakable screen. We’re working on it, but our customers can rest assured with our screen promise programme,” Mr Shi said.

To register and to learn more, customers should visit www.huaweiscreenpromise.co.nz

The Huawei P8 introduces “Rich Touch” allowing the display to differentiate between parts of the hand. Double-tapping a knuckle captures a full-length screen shot, while using your knuckle to draw a circle on the screen quickly selects and captures content.

A new “Find my phone by Voice” function allows users to give their smartphone its own name and then call out to it when misplaced. The P8 will respond through its speaker to tell you where it’s hiding.

The Huawei P8 leverages a combination of hardware and software to help users capture beautiful photographs, even in the worst lighting conditions. Features include:

  • Industry-leading Optical Image Stabilizer technology up to 1.2°, enabling high-quality photos and videos, and managing camera shake so images are consistently sharp.
  • The world’s first four-colour RGBW 13MP sensor and DSLR-level independent image processor enabling noise reduction when shooting and intelligent detection of a high-contrast lighting environment.
  • Four professional quality low-light shooting modes giving users access to a virtual photo and video studio to capture artistic inspirations.
For example, the Light Painting mode utilizes a manual camera shutter to capture broad swaths of light. It can capture a stream of light from a ferris wheel, or allow users to “light paint” their own freehand images using a torch in the dark.

The Huawei P8’s Director mode allows consumers to direct and control up to three other Android phones when shooting a video scene from four angles simultaneously and to synchronize video clip editing.

The Huawei P8 will be available in two attractive colours: Titanium Grey and Mystic Champagne.

From Friday, July 17, both models will be available in New Zealand at Spark, 2degrees, and all major retailers with an RRP of NZ$799.

I know it is not that much of a jump, but why launch a phone now with Android 5.02 instead of 5.1? It looks good though and should be a good performer as even my honor 6 with a lesser SOC has been performing flawlessly. Only thing is for me, Huawei are going in a thin and quite square direction which is not comfortable to hold, but this is not unique to Huawei though.

The processor performs well and the camera from memory is a Sony and is very good. The price is very competitive compared to other flagship devices at $799.
