My father-in-law is in the market for a Galaxy S6 and thought a couple of these Samsung wireless chargers would be a good idea. Anybody used these, are there better alternatives out there?

I use a generic wireless charging pad, which I got in a package with a wireless charging insert for my S4. I don't like that it makes a strange noise when it's plugged in and not in use. I don't like that the charger and/or phone beeps each time it starts/stops charging - if you leave it by your bed it reaches 100%, stops, goes to 99%, beeps, hits 100%, beeps, etc. Charging is fast enough, but maybe half the speed of a cable. I find I need to have wifi and 3g/4g turned off otherwise the phone gets warm, but that might be solved by now.

That seems to be a problem with the generic charging pads, i've one of these by the computer and that's exactly what it does on my S4, but the samsung branded one beside my alarm clock does not do that.

What is really annoying is the fully charged notification that goes off late at night or early in the morning, can seem to figure out a way to turn it off other than having blocking mode turned on to mute the notifications during the night.

I did buy a couple of those charges from PB Tech yesterday while they were on special, haven't tried them yet, but for $38 ea it's a good deal

Yup, I didn't realise that sale was just for yesterday so missed out on that price.

They don't come with wall chargers or cables. Just the pad.

Oh really, so you still need a wall adapter and micro usb cable?

The S6 & S6 edge support both the Qi and PMA wireless charging standards, so essentially any recent wireless charger should work. We've tested them internally with Nokia's wireless chargers and they work well.

The official Samsung unit is quite nice, however.

Are you referring to the round unit or the rectangle Samsung unit? The circular one seems to be a newer model I think? I can't tell fi there is a difference functionality-wise. Noel Leeming also specify only a 6 month warranty on the circualr model they stock, seems a bit strange. I would certianly hope they expect it to last longer than that. Are they prone to over-heating or something?

EDIT - added link

Yes, the round unit is the new one designed for the S6 & S6 edge. I would imagine the previous S Chargers work just fine as they use the same charging standard, but don't have any of those on-hand to test.

I don't normally read this part of the forum, just happened to come across this while trying to resolve an issue, so might not see replies.

We had a wireless charger for my wife's Note3, cheap Chinese model but high power variant.  It worked okay until the transmitter coil insulation broke down causing a short resulting in heat cooking the phone battery.  Get a brand name.

Regarding beeping when it cycles through charging states, I use the app called Llama to silence my phone at night, make it softer at work, and very soft at church.  Works great, based on which cell towers it can see but can also be time based.

My charger had a speaker in it. I solved the beeping problem by pulling it out. On my rooted phone I deleted the ogg file which had the noise in it. I do also use the app Llama to silence the phone, as well as reboot occasionally, automation, etc.
