Hey guys,
I've never owned a tablet but they seem to look exceedingly cheap! What do people think about something like this for $166?

Konka 10.1" quad core.

Mainly for browsing from bed and using as a separate monitor for my Macbook.

I looked at cheap tablets a while back. They were awful all kinds of ways. Except Nextbook. See if you can find one at a good enough price.

1024x600 resolution was awful on my Galaxy Tab 2 7", it's going to be unspeakably bad on a 10" tablet.

I can imagine it's also going to be very slow which will cause the most frustrations.

Go in and have a play with one to be sure. I'm guessing you won't be able to put it down fast enough. Plastic screen etc, but check could be different.

The 8" nextbook I have no hesitation in recommending. $129 at noel Leeming atm, mine is earlier model I think so again go look and feel before buying, but still 4.4 so if you really need 5x then wait a bit.

You are best to look for a good discount on a decent tablet I think. There are likely to be sales on tablets in the future, as the market is pretty saturated with them.

Given you have never owned one your expectations wouldn't be that high I'm guessing but as other have said you get what you pay for. One of two things could happen, you love having a tablet and very quickly find out its very limited and spend more on a better one, or you are happy with just having a tablet to much around with.

I bought a cheap tablet and it was fine for a year but ended up getting a Note 10.1 off trademe at a great price and I'm happy as.

Tablets are getting quite cheap now so have a look around first and read up online about reviews on product and their good and bad points.

I got a 10.1" SmarTab from jbhifi on special for around $160 for my kid.  Thats pretty decent, sure its not samsung quality but depending on what you want to use it for (for my case it was a 6 year old) cheap tablets can be perfectly good.

As above the resolution is terrible, so do go instore if possible and try it and see what you think of the tablet overall...  My only advice with cheap tablets is stay away from single core CPUs, but this one being quad core, the speed of things should be ok and the storage is reasonable...  certainly for the price it does seem quite good.

Doing your best is much more important than being the best.

I've never owned a tablet before but good points - glad I posted here before running off and buying it! I'll go and check it out in person and look at the NEXT. The price disparity in these devices is huge. I could get 7 of these 10.1" tablets for the same price as a single Samsung!

You could bring in one of these if you're not strictly after 10".

Perfect case for something less rigid with a plastic screen and a good suround.

This is true. Btw keep in mind if you are into the Apple ecosystem the entry dropped in relative terms:
