I have just purchased a Vodafone smart prime to replace my Nokia Asha 302 phone. I have yet to put the SIM card in the phone, but currently the phone is charging; I've associated my Gmail account with the phone, connected it to the home wifi, and am installing a couple of apps on it.

(1) On my old phone under Settings, it had the option of Asking which to use for Internet connection - either wifi or mobile broadband whenever an Internet connection was needed. Is it possible to have that setting applied to my new phone, so if for some reason my phone is not at home (and even then it will ask to connect to the router) it will ask to use the 4G/3G network?

(2) Can I give my phone a name? Whenever connecting my tablet to my old phone via bluetooth, it showed as connecting to 'Who?' (the name I gave my cellphone). Currently it is called VF-895N.

Many thanks
Stevie

The handset will connect to WiFi when coming into range of the router and use that over mobile data, You could of tested this when you put the SIM in the handset walked down the road and then walked back into range of your home WiFi

You change the name under Bluetooth settings I suspect

:)

On your first question, smartphones use data so much it would drive you mad. You can choose to turn mobile data on and off via a toggle however.

Look under bluetooth settings for the second one - you usually can.

So I can completely turn off the ability of the phone to use mobile data? How would I do that for the Smart Prime? EDIT: page 72 of the handbook tells me how to.

And also thanks JohnR.

To change the Bluetooth name of your phone go into Settings, then Bluetooth, then the three-dot menu at the top right and select "Rename this device".

In general, drag down the notification bar from the top of the screen to open the notification panel. Then hopefully there are some toggles evident. You may have to scroll left or right.

If you disable mobile data then MMS / PXT will not work

But texting will still work? I don't intend on sending a lot of photos/multimedia files to others over the Vodafone network.

It seems to have, as part of some recovery when I first turned it on, have took on a lot of apps that seem to be on my Samsung tablet (my Gmail account is the same on that). I might delete some of those apps from my phone so that not so many apps use mobile data. I highly doubt Periscope is a standard app installed on the phone when you first turn it on (I have Periscope on my tablet).

Yes no impact to SMS only MMS / PXT and you can turn mobile data off and on as required

Learn how to disable the apps that can't be removed, Under settings - application manager

Now I face an obstacle. My sim won't go into the phone. Its the right size, but something at the beginning of the phone is stopping it on one side going in.

Ummm, if you're trying to use your old sim I don't think they take the same sized sim.

Googling shows the Asha 302 to use a mini sim, whereas your new phone uses a micro sim. See a site like this for comparision
https://socialcompare.com/en/tools/compare-sizes/full-size-vs-mini-sim-vs-micro-sim-vs-nano-sim-vs-embedded-sim-vs-iphone4

I'm sure you can get your number switched over to a new sim card with Vodafone, if that's who you're with.

Have you tried inserting the sim that was supplied free with the phone? That'll give you 1GB /200 mins / unlimited text for a month.

Oh okay -- its just that the supplied SIM with the phone is the same size as my old SIM. But the new one can be broken down smaller - am I suppose to do that?

JohnR: Would it be possible to have my old number transferred to the new SIM?

It's not quite so easy to access on this phone, much to my disappointment (given it's my mother's first smartphone, and at aged 80 the more steps in the way of her achieving an action the more likely it is it'll go wrong!).

First off, the phone requires a double drag down; first drag opens notifications, a second opens settings. One then needs to click on 'Vodafone NZ" (I think it's called; assume this changes depending on provider?), and then touch the rocker switch to disable mobile data.

This means four actions, compared to the two required on a phone like my G3.

Yes - you need to make it to the "micro" size - not the smallest on that sim, which is the nano (eg, used by the iPad).

That sim supplied with the phone isn't a blank sim, but has a number on it. The standard way is to purchase a blank micro sim at a Vodafone store and have them transfer your number to this.

So while you use that free sim you'll be operating off a different mobile number (it'll be on the sim envelope).
