I figure I can say that being in that bracket
Anyway just back from the UK where I was talking to my brother who is a non tech person. I was thinking of a cheap android tablet with a simple interface that he could accept.

Say when he turns it on it defaults to a screen with say 6-8 icons One says "Skype Brother" "Skype Sister" Email Brother" "Email Sister' etc etc etc

Everything being possible I presume that the concept is either out there or can be created

There are some "lets take advantage of old people or their relatives who feel guilty" schemes.

Anyone seen an open source project similar to the brief outline above?

There are quite a few out there - many designed for Android phones, but I'd imagine some may work on a tablet as well.

A friend of mine set up an Android tablet for his elderly grandmother to use unaided; not sure how it worked in the end, but the app seemed to work fine.

The two I've heard about most are Wiser and Simple Senior Phone, but both are oriented around phones; I'll check with my friend as to what he used.

The app my friend used to simplify video calling for his grandmother was called Circly - apparently accessible from www.circly.com. He thought this was the best of the various apps he tried for this purpose.
