Hi

I'm way overdue for a new phone. I'm on a Lumia 800 that I got here, many years ago and now that it does not update anymore, I'm not able to surf some websites - particularly banks and financial stuff as the browser is pretty old and seems will never be updated. I loved this phone in that it has a clean/clear interface, good camera, lovely screen and indestructable build quality - I've dropped it heaps and it just keeps going.

I've done some research and feel that a Moto G is about right for my needs. Has anybody owned and used one of these before?

The features I'm looking for specifically are the dual sim (I'm travelling soon), lack of crapware (I don't want to see two calendars, two phonebooks, vendor specific apps you can never uninstall regardless of how bad they are, etc.) and low price/good value.

I don't game on my phone, I generally only use my mobile for work related stuff (calendar, phone, email), a few apps (running and calorie counting) and a bit of surfing, everything digital I own is in the Google ecosystem.

My gut feel is this is right for me and if not, $300 is an okay risk to take...

I'd like to hear some opinions on this specific model if anybody would care to share?

Many thanks in advance for taking the time to write something.

Be aware that it is 3G only - that may or may not matter to you.

Otherwise they are a great little phone. Solid OS, regular updates and cases are easy to find. You will prob need an SD card with only 8GB though.

Thanks. I'm not worried about 4G.

The advert says up to 32GB SD card and that's how it's sold, but reports indicate the phone is good up to 64GB and more, check here:

Looking at pricing and that I seldom listen to that much music, it seems 32GB is a decent sized card anyhow at around $20. Over that the price seems a bit off.

Hey Mate, they are about to release a new version of this (Moto G 3rd Generation). Not sure when it'll be hitting our shores but it shouldn't be too far away (maybe a month or two)

Look it up, it'll be improved specs and the price shouldn't be much higher

Cheers

Wait for the 3rd gen if you can.
Mobicity and some of the parallel importers have them now. Otherwise it should be more available within the next month. There is also a version with 16gb storage and 2gb ram which should provide some future proofing.

I bought an 8gb gen2 at time of local release, it is a good phone with some great features as against being a great phone

Personally I would consider the VF Smart Ultra, no dual sim, no 850mhz 3G but you get so much more for pretty much the same price 64bit Octacore, 4G, 1080P screen, 13MP camera, 2gb ram, 16gb storage, massive battery with fast charge

UI in both cases is about as pure as you can get this side of a Nexus branded phone

I am confident that if if you spent a week with each phone you would never use the moto G again

Seems the Moto G 3rd Gen has no dual sim :-(

But it is waterproof to a degree :-)

There is a dual sim variant, but I don't know if it will be released here - US and EU didn't have dual-SIM versions of the first two generations either.

Keep in mind that the gen 3 is expected to be at a higher price point than gen2 so based on AUD RRP's you are probably looking at over $400

They seem to be mid $300 from a few suppliers in NZ, unlocked.

The version to look for is the xt1550 if you go for the 3rd gen. Dual sim with band 28 4g support so it covers all the NZ LTE bands. Every other version seems to be single sim and either targeted at American or European cell frequencies.
Aussie is getting the xt1550 version as well so it is likely to be the one that comes here officially.

I would advise you to try it (especially with  lollipop) before you buy. You can feel the missing MHz quite often.

My wife has the 1st gen and I'm really impressed with it. Great build quality, and it's a nice phone to use. For the price it was a bargain.

My wife has the 1st gen and loves it .  Likes the snap case that turns on and off the screen when opened and closed.  Would like to update her to the Mk3 model  but haven't seen this snapper case anywhere or even if there is one ..

Regards,
