Wondering if its possible to flash a phone from recovery mode?
Samsung note 2 on cyanogenmod v11 to samsung stock rom
For eg
1/ save samsung stock rom on sd card
2/ boot phone into recovery mode
3/ select install and point to the sd card file location and install?

I think I read your question right. You want to go CM11 -> Stock ROM.
If your phone is on CM11 then it probably has a custom recovery. Certainly my experience of both CWM and TWRP recoveries is exactly as you describe, load your new ROM onto the SD card, boot into recovery, flash the ROM. A few things to make sure of though. Make a Nandroid backup of your old OS, backup your data, wipe all the caches and make sure the firmware on your phone is compatible with the ROM you are flashing. Otherwise you risk, at the least, a boot loop, or the worst, a bricking.
XDA normally has an excellent thread for each phone type called "Back to Stock" or something similar.
I suggest you do lots of reading before attempting what you are asking if you haven't delved into this in the past, including how to recover from things like bootloops.

Edit: Be aware, some ROMs are temperamental about the recovery used to flash them. Also, most of my experience is with HTC devices, although I have rooted a couple of Samsung's, I haven't installed custom recoveries in those.

After a couple of days reading everyone talks about odin and not using recovery mode.
I'm struggling to find my stock cable and no coms with Odin as a result. So thinking outside the box.
Wondering if my file format will be correct if I went down this route as well.

will take your advice and research boot loop issues too.

Make sure you have the correct Samsung drivers installed on your computer, and I think, don't have Kies installed (for the no comms problem).

I read that kies is good for having drivers but make sure its not running.

Okay, you are one step ahead of me. The no comms thing can be either the cable, the usb port, or the drivers/ software from what I have read. I would think any good quality mUSB cable would be okay, just not a $5 one.

tried a couple of different versions of Odin with no success. I am using a virtual windows 7 machine, but the doco for odin says this is fine.

Does anyone know if I can flash via recovery mode? ie not using Odin, but just using my phone and the image on the Sd card?

Not sure I have this right but any reasonable USB cable should be fine. Go to Sammobile , select your rom using your model number and country/Telco. See Sammobile instructions below. You can't flash a stock Rom for recovery as it will install stock recovery and unroot your phone.

Instructions

Extract (unzip) the firmware file
Download Odin v3.10.7
Extract Odin ZIP file
Open Odin v3.10.7
Reboot Phone in Download Mode (press and hold Home + Power + Volume Down buttons)
Connect phone and wait until you get a blue sign in Odin
Add the firmware file to AP / PDA
Make sure re-partition is NOT ticked
Click the start button, sit back and wait few minutes

thx for the reply.
I have now found the stock cable. But can not see the phone in Odin. My next step is to try using a friends windows laptop, rather than my vm w7 machine.

I've tried a few versions of Odin and still nothing. I've unstalled kies and downloaded samsung usb drivers as well.

Thus why I was hoping to flash via recovery mode and not use Odin/pc at all.
I'm happy to lose root.

Can I flash from recovery mode?

no you can't flash a stock rom from recovery.

What are you trying to achieve?

I don't know about using in virtual window but if odin can't see it then it could be a driver issue. Have you enabled "USB Debugging" its in dev options in setup, if you can't see that then you need to go to "about" and tap 5-8 times on build number then you will have developers options. Where you in download mode or recovery mode?

I have turned on debugging and was in download mode.
I think i'm going to have to use my friends windows pc as my next trouble shooting step

cyanogenmod v11 is too buggy on a samsung note 2. Its a shocker.
I could try cm v10, but my partner is just happy to have samsung stock back on it.

try one of the ustom stock roms there will be heaps on xda and just flash from recovery
what model note 2
