First time rom flasher, I have rooted my Galaxy Note 2 with Kingroot. Hoping to move to CM12.1. Have downloaded zip and gapps to extSD. Backed up with TiBu to extSD and internal, all user apps and system data. Have installed TWRP custom recovery.

Game plan is to now flash CM and then restore system data via TiBu

Issues I am still uncertain of, as I'm moving from a touchwiz based rom to aosp, what messaging app will restore messages etc? I guess i need a good camera app?

If there's any advice or you can see holes in my plan please let me know

Don't restore system data when moving to a different base ROM, just user app data. Other than that your plan seems fine, although you will want to make a nandroid backup in recovery first and keep it somewhere safe. I use SMS backup and restore for backing up text messages.

Definately use SMS Backup & Restore.. Works pretty much perfect every time Ive used it. And I also wouldnt recommend restoring your system data. Other than that CM works well. Used to run it on my samsung phone before it met an untimely demise :)

Thanks guys, my confidence is building.

Yes I have done a nandroid backup, I should put it somewhere safe externally. Is it possible to access an otg drive from a custom recovery if things go awry?

I'm still getting my head around the terminology in TiBu. What I want is to be able to restore the apps and the app data. What does system data mean?

I've got to get all my ducks in a row first time as I have no backup phone on hand, nor easy access to a pc should things go pear shaped.

Another vote for SMS Backup and Restore. What about email settings - have you exported those? And yes, definitely search for a good camera app. CM are completely hopeless in this area. If you use their camera app you'll find your shutter has an extreme lag and the phone will freeze if you use the video function - a forced reboot is the only way out.

Don't do this. Allow the apps to reload from the store then restore user data only.

Does anyone trust Kingroot? they have access to your entire tablet. not sure if they will log your keystrokes/passwords ... anyone?

I found a call log backup app too. Same app writer as the sms backup.

There are some apps that i don't want the latest playstore version, i assume that titanium allows me to bring the older version across.

Re kingroot, who knows if it's dodgy or not, once i get on to CM i won't need kingroot anymore as it has its own inbuilt root manager afaik

In which case make backups of the .apk's and sideload them - do research first to make sure the versions you have are compatible with Android 5+ and it's ART cache. Apps will need to be installed into your current system, not dumped onto it from their current install state from a completely different android version with a Dalvik cache.

TiBu does not "bring anything across" it simply says "x was the install state then so x will be the install state now". You'll be setting yourself up for a lot of stability issues by merely restoring the app, assuming the apps will actually work.

Sorry I'm now getting confused. Does TiBu actually backup the apk or not? I have apps that are deprecated, some modified, some I wish not to use latest market version as features have been removed. I know how to save and sideload apks, but does TiBu not do this?

I vaguely remember there being a setting in titanium to back up your apks so you can sideload them. Been a long while since I used it though so I could be wrong. Dont have a rooted phone so havent bothered with it

Ok. So this morning i took all my brave pills. Backed up everything. Nandroid etc. Wipe cache/dalvik. Try to flash CM12.1 All it comes up with is failed. The script says no MD5 file found. If i turn verify zip on it says zip corrupt. So i restore. Im back at square 1. Suggestions peoples?

I'd download the zip file again and use an MD5 Checksum program to check it hasn't been corrupted. If you are using Windows to download you can find freeware Checksum programs on the internet.

I'm reporting back with success. After the fourth attempt at downloading the zips for both cm12.1 and gapps I finally got some uncorrupted flashable files. I've learned a huge amount in the process. I let it redownload the majority of the apps through play store. But it is as easy to restore from TiBu which does backup the apk. I've restored a number of apps user data as well through TiBu and so far has worked fine.
So now I have a shiny new operating system and it seems to be going great.

My comment does not contribute to this thread in anyway, but just had to say..

When you see this thread under Geekzone Live you are instantly drawn into clicking it to investigate further. Without seeing what sub-section it is under 'first time flasher' could mean, erm.. something else.
