As the title suggests.. I'm looking at buying the s6 Edge+, as I'm not all convinced on the new iPhone specs.

What I am wondering is;
1. if 2D customise their firmware on these phones (i.e. adding apps etc.)
2. What kind of release schedule do they follow? Is it samsungs? or do they also have to approve the updates like VF?
3. If they do customise it, is there an official ROM which has no carrier customisations on it?

I'm going to have a chat with someone in a Vodafone store tomorrow, to see if they will come to the table and match the 2D/NoelLeeming deal... (64GB for the 32GB price).

But failing that, still curious about my questions, in case.

Since you've mentioned other firmware, you could flash your phone with the other carriers firmware. They're all the same model in NZ.

There is usually an 'open' version of the firmware for most devices for each region too. For Europe IIRC it is XEF (Usually for GxxxF models) and SE Asia/Pacific XSA for GxxxI models.

Kind of depends what you want. None of the carriers seem to offer any of the dual SIM models of their flagship phones, while the parallel importers do. After my last couple of trips (US, Middle East) all of which involved faffing around with a second phone to use a second SIM, that pretty much rules out NZ telcos as phone suppliers for me. Interestingly, two of the stores (Spark and 2D) both told me that they get a lot of enquiries from people who want them, after apologising for not carrying them. Which seems a bit daft - if the phones exist, there is high demand for them, and they want to sell phones, why not offer what people are asking for?

As a side note, I'm looking for a phone upgrade myself. I was going to get the S6 Edge+ as well (upgrading from an older galaxy model) but, annoyingly, Samsung has dropped the removable battery, the ability to use a microSD card, and the waterproofing they introduced with the S5. Which seems daft as those were some of the key attractions of galaxy models over other top-end options such as the iPhone.

I'm currently contemplating an LG G4, which I can get in a dual SIM configuration for quite a bit less than an S6, and which the reviews say has a lovely camera.

There isnt really a regular release cycle, google releases os then samsung releases os for specific phone(if your lucky) then carrier approves the update and it is then made available. This can take many many months, and as your mobile gets older it takes longer and longer for this to happen. If your phone is not a top of the line device you may not even get an update, ever. If you want to go down the unofficial way then there is most likly alot more options. If you want regular security bug fix and feature updates go with ios.
