I removed the mini SD card from my Galaxy S5 yesterday when changing the SIM card (phone was switched off at the time).  After putting it back in and switching on I get the error msg

"sd card empty or has unsupported filesystem"

If I put the card in the card reader on my PC, however, I can access the contents - and have backed them up to my hard drive for good measure.  Just in case of any card issues I then deleted the contents, formatted the card and copied the contents back again.  Card back in phone and same error.

I've googled the error msg and see many similar queries, almost all of which lead to a suggestion to format the card.  Not all that helpful now I've been through that stage.

Can anyone offer any suggestions?  It's starting to sound like there's a fault with the card slot in the phone.  Time for a warranty claim?

Thanks in advance for any thoughts.

Martin

Have done that too - the prompt when I click on the error msg is to format the card.  Message runs across the top "Preparing SD card", then same error.  When I connect the phone to the PC by cable, the card no longer shows as an available subdirectory.

What's weird is I just checked the card post in-phone format and all the contents are still there.  That, I really don't get.

The Card slots in the Samsung Galaxy phones are tricky little suckers, make sure you have the SIM and the SD card correctly and securely seated. It may also be useful to give the contacts on the card a careful clean and while doing that examine
for damage.

Thanks, Mike, the contacts on the card are presumably fine since it reads on the PC with no problems - I wonder if the contacts in the phone have a problem, not that I'd know how to recognise them.

Not always the case, different card readers have varying tolerances. What can be read in one will be rejected in another. If you know someone with a S5 try it in their phone or take it into your Telcos' store and ask to try it.

OK, thanks - I'll try a swap with someone else's card first before paying for a new one.  I'll report back once I've given it a try.

I've finally had a chance to swap cards with a matching phone, and my card works fine in the other phone, and the 3rd-party card won't read in mine.  So it looks pretty conclusive that the card reader in my phone has packed in.  Not sure what to do now, other than just manage without the extra storage space till it's time to upgrade the phone a year or three hence.
