Easiest way to get the proper apps is via the google play store.
You have to make google play store think you are in the UK.
I found Hola unblocker is an ok way to temporarily achieve this.

I know there is a bit of an issue with hola unblocker potentially letting data relay through your phone - just install it - use it - then uninstall.

So this is what you do:

  • Install hola from the play store
  • On your android device go into settings/Apps
  • Find google play store and click it - select clear data and clear cache - clear both of these.
Google play store now doesnt know where you are now.

  • Start Hola and set it to UK.
  • You shoud be able to set Hola to make Google play store open and think its in the UK.
  • You will have to sign into the play store.
  • It will now think you are in the UK and you should be able to browse and install apps for the UK.

When finished remove hola.
Under android go to settings/apps and clear the data and cache against the google play store app.

Next time you open the play store you will have to sign in again and it will think you are in your default location.

I have discovered once I sideload the applications (which is much easier than using Hola or some other VPN), then it appears that Google Play thinks you have the app installed in a standard manner and offers regular updates. I just received the latest update for the ITV player which is supposed to improve the picture quality and watched bits of the AB game today through it with no issues.
