Looking for assistance with his phone I got recently.  I had a play with replacing the ROM, now I cannot get the thing to connect correctly with NZ Vodafone.

It had a custom ROM when purchased, which worked well.  But I cannot find a copy of this anywhere, only the original Japan versions.  These end up sim locking the network to CDMA quite often.

I have tried SpaceX 4.2 rom, which also ends up locking the sim/network.

If anyone has had experience with these, or knows what I can do (other than selling it for parts..)

Sounds like your kernel could be incorrect. You will need a kernel & rom thats compatible with GSM / 3G / 4G networks for Vodafone. There is a link on here that explains what frequency you need. http://www.geekzone.co.nz/forums.asp?forumid=97&topicid=150270 . Once you gain that then you should be ok with getting the Vodafone network.

I had an issue a while ago when I was flashing an old Xperia X10 for a friend and ended up that it was a Telecom branded phone so it ended up not working on Vodafone. I had to try and get a kernel to work for VF and low and behold got it working.

Here is a link:

You can also try and flash the AUS vodafone kernel that will work in NZ.

Thanks,
Yea, this is part of the problem.  OK forgive my limited knowledge.
So I have G900J, which is not listed on Galaxy5Update page at all.  Here is my version info:
AP: SCL23XXU1BOA3
CP: SCL23KDU1BNG3
CSC: SCL23XXV1BOA4

Are you saying I can just use one of the following, EVEN THOUGH THEY ARE FOR G900I?
SM-G900I  (Australia, New Zealand, India & Taiwan)
Vodafone     G900IDVU1BOE1 VAU     5.0 Lollipop     June 2015

I am happy to go down to a 4.2 revision as long as I can get this going.

Ok here is a guide for yourself.

http://androidforums.com/threads/41-galaxy-s5-models-dummies-guide.892162/

Now the issue with carrier phones are making sure that your phone supports the frequency for Voda NZ. That CP number is VERY important. Baseband especially. If you can make sure it can support NZ networks then you are fine. I think your phone has the incorrect CP so its based on KDDI Japanese networks.

I have seen articles with Sony phones from Japan that are near impossible to unlock and end up just being on the japanese network.

Try this from the XDA, there is a setting to reset the signal so it takes GSM network which is what you want. There is a photo tutorial link in one of the comments to help.

Good luck and let me know how you get on.

Thank you,

Yeah, I had trolled all over XDA forums and read extensively through the articles you have just supplied (along with dozens of others).  But mentioning the CP number is the key drew me towards this article.

http://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-s5/general/how-to-add-rf-lte-frequency-bands-to-t2886059/post55635555#post55635555

This one walks you through how to assign/add-to your network options.  This allowed me to customise which band frequencies my phone was able to use.  In turn unlocking the vodafone bands which my phone is now quite happily connecting to with the Android Lollipop 5.0 Space-X v4.2 Rom.

I researched the crap outta this before finally biting the bullet and requesting help on here.

Added bonus, learnt how to pre-emptively key in appropriate roaming bands when travelling, thanks to this list.

Very Happy end to this story!

Thats great, yeah I was thinking it was the CP. Thats great to hear, it is risky as and you done the right thing researching the crap out of it. XDA are really good! It shouldnt be long til 5.1.1 comes out for the S5. I have a Sony Xperia Z on 5.1.1., I know Sony have been great with updates but now im in the market to root it but at the moment you cant.

Hi, glad you got your phone to work. There is hope for me yet!

I'm having a similar(ish) issue with my S5 SCL23.. the phone sends and receives calls and sms fine (although drops off the network briefly every now and then) however GPS does not usually work, unless I take the sim card out. Are you experiencing a similar issue, or has your tinkering resolved this. I am pretty much a newbie so not keen on doing much that could potentially make my problem worse!

Thanks in advance
Melissa

See related post topic #185283 on GPS issues - can be worked around by disabling data (can do this by entering flight mode), and setting GPS locating method to GPS only (rather than "High Accuracy").  I'm on the Spark network.

If anyone knows a better workaround or fix, I'm all ears!

LOL, Since Pokemon Go launch in Japan (where the SCL23 is from) the same problem has been an issue with custom ROMS.  As a result this little piece of information came out which has totally solved my Mobile Data & GPS issue.  It requires an App called "Angry GPS" which is not available at the Google Play App store.  Tested it today, and it perfectly tracked me walking around and kept mobile data working.  Next test will be directions with Google Maps.  Feeling confident.
