I note that on a Galaxy S6, you can highlight an SSID and untick the auto join function. 

But on something like a Nexus 5X, this option isn't there.  Does anyone know of a way this could be done?  I don't want to 'forget the network.  I just want it to connect on demand.

I think this is Samsung specific.

I really wish Android would allow hierarchal ranking of networks.

On my Sony Z5 (Lollipop) a long press on the network name in the saved networks list does this
