I need to automate a process as follows.....
At Home, switch 2g on, wifi on.
Leave Home, switch 3g/4g on, wifi off.
Tasker and others will do the wifi on/off but I cant find a way of switching between 2g and 3g/4g.
Any suggestions?

No matter where you go, there you are.

I am not opposed to rooting so will I be able to do what I want with Tasker and Secure Settings and Root?

Tasker + Root + https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.cygery.togglenetworktype
You may also be able to do it with the Secure Settings plugin.
That app looks good, may be on a mission here, thanks.![]()

If you'd like a non-root solution, try AutoInput - you can use it to simulate touch events to toggle 3G/4G.
Although I'd highly recommend rooting your device if you can - it just makes automation tasks so much more easier.
Things used to be so much simpler before Lollipop!

Nobody's asked yet, but what are you trying to achieve with that Tasker profile? If you're trying to save battery, you probably wont notice much between switching from 3G/4G down to 2G because all the data will be going via wifi at home anyway. The radios sleep pretty well on most phones when they're not active. I used to run a profile like this on the old galaxy Nexus, and later on the Nexus 4 with root+secure settings as mentioned. It does work, but I personally found it didn't really save any battery, if anything the Tasker profile waking the phone up used more.
How are you planning on detecting location? If wifi is off, you need to do location based tracking to work out when to turn on wifi. If you use cell tower location, I believe that's still the lowest battery usage, but I found leaving wireless on again barely used much battery.
Something to think about anyway, it's a fun experiment getting it all going and encourage you to give it a go if you're interested in doing so; but don't expect it to magically give you much battery savings

peejayw: I have no 3g or 4g reception at home, only 2g. When I leave home and wifi I want 3g or 4g on for data. Battery save is not the issue.
Your phone should automatically connect to 2G if you don't have any 3G or 4G reception. If it's not doing this already, you might need to set the preferred network type in your phone's service menu.
To access the service menu, dial *#*#4636#*#* -> Phone information -> Set preferred network type.
Select LTE/gsm auto(PRL) and press back till you exit the menu.
You might want to give the other options a try as well (eg: gsm auto (PRL)) and see if it works better.
Well its a little more complicated, didnt want to muddy the water with too much detail initially. I do get a strong (4 bars) signal on 3g but it will suddenly drop completely out and then back to full strength after a few minutes, so when you are on a phone call the call will drop, guaranteed. This is not a phone issue, it happens to everyone in the house. It happens if the phone is sitting stationary on my desk full signal one moment, zilch the next. I have monitored the connection and it doesn't decrease, it drops out totally.
If I use 2g it never drops but when I leave the house I need to have it back to 4g for fastest data connection as I need to remotely monitor some home devices. Invariably, after being away from home with 3/4g connected, I come home, take a call and have it drop because I have not switched it back to 2g, very annoying.

Root + LLama + Secure Settings = simple win . I can't say 100% sure you can do 2G/3G/4G but anything you can do with secure settings you can do with Llama. It's also good on battery, can do cell tower location based ring profiles, switch phone to airplane mode at night, all kinds of stuff.
