Moto G 2nd Gen Marshmallow OTA update Installed over WiFi yesterday. Process:

- download update
- cull apps, app data.
- free up some space (1gb)
- restart
- install
- restart
- update play store
- update apps
- restart

The download was approx 485MB. Install smooth as approx 20min. Longest part was optimising existing apps. I was holding my breath on performance but everything is working well and performance is truly excellent. Browsing in Chrome actually seems to be faster.

I did not expect more life out of this phone so this is great. Now it is marginally more likely I will go Moto again for the next phone.

The officlal free space requirement is 200MB so I probably overdid it.

Still some exploring to do so I'm interested to hear if any there are any issues with yours.

Anecdotal only but my son says after the update his battery life has deteriorated considerably.  Seems to using the Calendar more which is strange since he doesn't use the calendar much.

Updated mine on Saturday but not without a couple of issues.

Because its only an 8GB memory ive been using an SD card so all my apps can fit . But Marshmallow requires you to format the card if you want to carry on doing that. The system will then treat SD storage like phone storage apparantly. The downside is that you cant place the card straight into another phone coz its now encrypted to the original phone. So make sure you copy your SD to your computer then drag everything back later on.

The other issue I had was with a notification saying Google Play Services needed updating. I clicked on it and the Google Play Services app said deactivated where the update button is - very wierd. So I bit the bullet and did a factory reset and started all over again. Bit of a pain in the arse but notification has gone and everything is working well.

Settings menu is different now so slowly figuring out where all the info and cool things like Doze etc live.

Cant comment on battery life yet because of resetting up of everything but it certainly isnt worse than on Lollipop.

The big issue was the SD card so read up on the link before you take the plunge.

Motorola's release notes for the G2 Marshmallow:

http://motorola-mobility-en-in.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/109655

Among other things explains how to access the alarms only mode. It's a multi step process (vol, tap, vol) compared to the old way (vol, tap). This is a feature I used all time and now it is a small pita but I will get used to it. I guess.

This doc could be the top 10 complaints from beta testers ; ).

Anyway it's a small price to pay for the update. My particular g2 variant only got updates to 5.0.2 so I'm really happy with a jump to a so far fully functioning 6.

Ok I'm supposed to be using the new 'do not disturb' button for that feature. Not so bad : ).

Yeah they improved that system from lollipop thats for sure.

I had to have the Power Toggles app just to have the ability to easily set to vibrate or silent made. Pain in da ass.

1 million times more responsive since the update. The SD card as phone storage is a god send - still have weird bug with Google Play Music reporting 1.8GB free (which is the ACTUAL phone storage).

Will see if my bluetooth streaming is more stable - dropouts have been doing my head in.

Both my son and a friend who have the Moto G Gen 2 commented that after the 6.0 upgrade, whenever the phone is restarted, it goes through a long Android is optimising apps process. And this happens every time the phone is restarted, not just after the update was applied. Anybody else notice this?

I did a minor app cull before the upgrade.

On first restart I got the 'optimising apps' message. I have maybe ten 3rd party apps + Google apps. Ie; not many. But it still found 150 to optimise on the first start.

On second and maybe third restart I got 'starting apps' message on-screen for maybe 10 seconds.

My feeling is there are some background cleanup processes with various triggers and they may recur depending on installed apps and actions.

I had a bluelight filter app and I got rid of that after the update so that may have helped. My guess is system modifying apps like that are harder for the process to deal with correctly.

Btw, after upgrade 4.4 > 5.0.1, I had some similar starting apps message *every* boot. I ignored it. So then it may be pure luck that i uninstalled the offending app or apps prior to the 5.0.2 > 6.x marshmallow upgrade this time. For whatever reason my restarts are now message free.

Has anyone tried to get their SD card to act as internal storage?
I formatted mine as internal but it doesn't recognise it when trying to save google maps offline, keeps saying my memory is full. The internal 8gb is used, but it isn't adding the SD card.

Not tried. Maybe uninstall maps, restart, reinstall, restart.

Wifi connect seems to take longer.

On the other hand I get less app complaints abiut no connection during the initiation phase.

Overall I'm thinking it's the same amount of time or just a few percent longer from initiation to completion.

Installed now for several weeks. No significant issues.

In the windowed view the application close button (X) does not appear sometimes. I ignore the issue and close some other time. It is a minor annoyance only.

Updated my daughters phone, no issues over the lay few weeks, the combined storage is a god send given it's 8gb origins, she was always using 100% of phone memory and making it my problem to sort
