So had a brain explosion and hit the go button on an Alcatel Idol 4 (for the wife). Bought it via clove, to make the most of the brexit pounding...

Anyways, to the nitty gritty features:

  • 5.2 inch 1080 LTPS IPS screen
  • Snapdragon 617 (1.7 and 1.3 quadcore clusters)
  • 3gigs of ram
  • 16gig internal with 200GB microSD support
  • 3.6W dual front (and rear speakers - clever stuff which swaps R & L when flipped)
  • 3G: 850/900/1900/2100
  • LTE: 1, 3, 7, 8, 20, 28
  • 5Ghz WiFi
  • Boom key - sounds gimmicky (contextual button)
  • 13MP f/2 rear cam with dual tone flash + 8MP front cam with flash!
  • 2610 non removable battery, comes with QC2.0 charger
  • dragontail glass (similar to gorilla glass, i've had good experience with older xiaomi phones)
  • 'premium' glass on metal build = fingerprint magnet
  • ships with marshmallow (6.0)
  • 'old' micro usb

here's what's meant to come in the box...

  • VR headset
  • JBL headphones
  • flip case
  • shell case
  • screen protector

Phone looks pretty awesome, will be interesting to see it in the flesh - will keep you all updated once it arrives

Looks very cool.

Its unclear, is this an officially supported 'daydream' device?

I doubt the idol 4 would make the cut due to only being 1080, as from what I've read qhd was essentially required, though, things just might seem blocky and still work with this.

Yeah, gave up trying to find any reviews on the device itself, as well as the 4s which sounded odd considering how long it had been announced for. But yep, the idol 4 will be a bb device and the 4s is the Vodafone smart platinum. Will be interesting to see how interchangeable firmwares will be.

Wow, thoroughly impressed with this device. The sound is amazing. I haven't really played around with other phones with front facing speaker's, but have read how impressed people are.

Initial thoughts are the cameras focused fast (indoors this evening, in pretty good lighting). The front facing cam had heaps of detail. Phone feels really thin. The build quality seems excellent. Glass on glass is a fingerprint magnet, though also could be the screen protector that came with it isn't great (just s normal pet one, though it is Alcatel branded). The two cases that come with it are nice. The vr headset is cool, but I don't know how much use it'll get.

But man, the sound, I really didn't know what to expect but the clarity and how loud it is impressive.

How is the battery life? Would love to hear your thoughts on the software and hardware.

Will have to come back to battery life - wifey has proclaimed she's not going to transition till the weekend - which also means I get to play with it a bit more.

The device has a few preinstalled apps, I guess to showcase the VR capabilities, but most of them could be uninstalled.  The key placement is odd, but can get used to it I guess.  Where a power button normally would be, there is a 'boom' key. The power button itself is towards the top on the left, but the boom key can turn on the screen/wake the device, so you only really need to use the power button to turn the screen off / access the power menu.

Is there anything specific you'd like me to try /  you're interested in?
