Hi

Looking at an Android phone and impressed with the reviews of the S7 Edge.

But trying to work out the pricing and see these

Seems so much cheaper than  the standard retailers here - am I missing something?

Is there a catch and I would be up for duty as well?

thanks

They're parallel imported. The phones will have been purchased overseas where they're cheaper and imported here. They'll still be genuine products and will have warranties, with the main catch being that generally speaking after-sales support sucks, it can sometimes be a headache getting warranty claims accepted etc. Read the warranty information on each website. But as per the Consumer Guarantees Act you're protected by the same rights as if you bought from a local retailer. You don't have to pay customs as the products have already been imported.

Einfo have a store on the north shore, Auckland. You have someone to deal with should there be an issue with your phone post purchase. Becextech? Who knows if they even have any physical presence in NZ?

Many items in this household have been purchased from einfo, I would be a bit wary of buying from becextech.

The advantage of parallel imported beside price is availability of alternate models, eg dual sim. It is possible on some models to flash local firmware if that's what you desire, often the parallel imported phones will have firmware from another locale that updates earlier anyway! Eg my old note 2 had German firmware, a newer one had nordic, my mother's dual sim S5 has middle eastern firmware etc.

They typically will supply an alternate usb charger as the boxed adapter will be for the wrong region.

If you have decided to get parallel imported then I agree that get it from a store that has a physical presence for after sales support.

Buying without seeing (from just a website) is a little bit of a gamble (if you want to save that extra)

But recently I have avoided parallel imports altogether coz the big stores here (although getting from there you will spend another $100 - $200, you will have much better after sales support)

A classic example would be the Note 7 battery issue, the telcos here are giving out J5 handsets as a interim replacement while the new handsets are on their way - I dont know how a parallel import shop would be handling it

Sometimes it pays you back (in terms of customer service) to pay the extra to get something from a big retailer here in NZ

I agree with the comments above about the advantages of buying locally through the official sources.

JB have a special on it for 1199 this week.

Awesome phone.....Just make sure you get a case straight away for it. My wife passed on the cases offered by Spark and was looking to get one off Trademe.

One week after having the phone it slipped out of her hand and hit the concrete. The back of the phone is glass and it shattered!!!!

Luckily the front Edge screen is ok.

She is dropping it off today for repair so I am just hoping that the repair is not going to a stupid amount :-(

Thanks for this.  Sure seems a shame to have to put a case on it... but I guess it pays to be safe.
