Hi all,

Looking for a viable upgrade device from an S5. Bit bored of Samsung so S7 is out of the picture.

Have looked at Huawei P9 Plus and One Plus 3. Both of which I like.

Speed and a good camera are the main prerequisites. I like the look and feel of the P9 but the OP3 does it for speed hands down. So it's a tie at this stage.

Price not necessarily a factor.

Would be interested in people's thoughts on these two devices and any other possible alternatives.

Cheers.

I need to find a replacement for my Note 7 and under the circs the S7 and S7 Edge won't cut it. Very taken with the Huawei P9 Plus and will most likely go with that. Nice package overall IMO.

In what way are you "bored" with Samsung? Do you feel that they are not innovative enough for your requirements?

Or is it that you are you just a bit bored with your current phone, maybe had it too long and feel like a change?

What features are you looking for?

I've had an S1, S3 and S5. Was keen on the S7 when they came out, but resisted buying one, and now glad I did.

Buying a new Samsung just makes me feel like i am still using the old phonesame interface, etc. but having paid $1300+ for the privilege.

As noted, I want something fast, that is why the OnePlus 3 appeals with the 6GB RAM. Use it a lot for photos, so the camera is important, plus all the day to day stuff, email, internet, etc.

OnePlus 3 is a nice phone but doesn't have a memory card slot.

I hear you about the UI and this is a problem with every make of phone. I've just had to downgrade from a Note 7 to the S7E and losing the new Samsung Grace UI certainly made my heart sink a little. Hopefully the upgrade to Grace will not be too far away.

Some major thing to consider is reliability and software updates. Although Samsung and Apple maybe boring, their build quality and reliability tends to be better. maybe also look at googles phones, even though they are ugly, as at least it should get software updates when they are released and not a year later when the carrier decides to get around to release them. IMO all phones are boring, as they are just touch screens, it comes down to the software installed and the launcher you decide to use. But Samsung touchwiz interface does look very dated and I just dislike the look of it. If it was pure android, it would be far better. But like Apple, they want to put their own stamp on how it looks.

I love my S5. What I don't love is not being able to move apps to sd card after upgrade to latest version of android and am considering rooting my handset. I am quite nervous about doing this however.

Have you tried running custom roms like CM13?

Are you sick of touchwiz? and want the google experience?

or does the S5 not do something you expect from a phone?

P9 Plus and OnePlus 3 are great phones and you'd do well with either. P9 has an SD slot and supports 4G Extended which the OP3 doesn't, but the OP3 is Dual SIM whereas the local P9s are not.

Worth taking a look at the ASUS ZenFone 3 Deluxe, the LG V20, the Sony Xperia XZ, and the Google Pixel/Pixel XL too.

The problem with rooting is that it prevents you being able to use apps like banking ones.
