Going through my RSS feeds and cleaning up the dead ones, found this Samsung piece "SAMSUNG announces an Android security update process to ensure timely protection from security vulnerabilities" (August 2015).

Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd., will implement a new Android security update process that fast tracks the security patches over the air when security vulnerabilities are uncovered. These security updates will take place regularly about once per month.

Samsung has recently fast tracked security updates to its Galaxy devices with the recent Android Stagefright issues working with the carriers and partners. Acknowledging the importance of time sensitivity in addressing major vulnerabilities, the company plans to further develop this process and implement it as a timely security update practice.

“With the recent security issues, we have been rethinking the approach to getting security updates to our devices in a more timely manner. Since software is constantly exploited in new ways, developing a fast response process to deliver security patches to our devices is critical to keep them protected. We believe that this new process will vastly improve the security of our devices and will aim to provide the best mobile experience possible for our users,” said Dong Jin Koh, EVP of Mobile Research and Development at Samsung Electronics.

Samsung is currently in conversation with carriers around the world to implement the new approach. In collaboration with carriers and partners, more details about the specific models and timelines will be released soon.

For you Samsung users, how is this working?

I don't think my wife has had any monthly updates on her S7 Edge. She has had a couple of updates in all the time she has owned it.

But not a monthly update since August 2015, right?

Can confirm I've been getting monthly (or so) updates on my Note 4. Haven't had any issues installing them, it generally gives an alert and asks if you want to do it now or overnight. I usually select overnight and wake up to the phone acting as normal.

I've been getting fairly frequent updates on my S7. I wouldn't say monthly, but probably 4 in the last 6 months. Far more often than I have had on previous Galaxy models.

Mine is an overseas model, Taiwan I think. Security updates seem to be monthly. I guess they'll keep it up for a couple of years like most of their product support.

Not quite one every month, but you can see here the list of updates for the S7 on Spark.

OTA updates for the VF Note5 and Spark S5, two in 2016, on each, one of these were rolled into the 6.0 update iirc. Had that many on my (UK) Sony since I got it to replace the Note5 a few months back.

This is the reason why i flash the non branded AU firmware on the s7 edge.  I had a go at spark about the security updates and why they are taking so long.

XSA firmware does seem to be kept up to date.

Just hoping that the XSA will be updated to Android 7.1.1 and not just android 7.0 otherwise I will flash the Non branded UK firmware.

I asked this because I saw the CVE 2016 vulnerability list and the Samsung press release. It seems since I created the thread the list is making the news now.

Basically Android is the most vulnerable platform/software in number of problems reported. Surely we're not seeing fixes for this many problems?

We haven't seen any patches released on a monthly basis to the any of the Galaxy S-series we have deployed. The press released seemed very promising, but perhaps the devil is in the detail:

What classifications of security patches fit the category of being eligible to be fast tracked? What security patches fit the category in order to be fast tracked? Which carriers and partners are involved, and what is the process of release? Lots of questions....

Have clarified the status of the 'new' Android security update? I haven't read anything recently.
