Nvidia is releasing a new Shield TV mid January. https://www.nvidia.com/en-us/shield/shield-tv/

New features

Looks interesting.

I need to replace the bedroom media player, and this looks like it could fit the bill. I have been looking at the current model as it has a plex client etc and reviews really well. This one looks even better.

The media player is the one I pensioned off from the living room, and is too long in the tooth and won't play some of my newer encodes properly.

Forgot to mention that the price is about the same as before. But this now includes the remote control (which is $50usd)  as well as a game controller.

$199 usd for the Shield TV (about $320nzd to the door).

$299 usd for the Shield TV Pro (about $441nzd + GST to the door).

They are great units I have 3, I do not use any other devices at all.

Those aren't new features. THe current model does 4K and HDR. Literally the only change is the controller. If you have one already you are better pissing your money against a wall.

The current model does 4K Netflix and Youtube I believe, 4K HDR is new and coming to the original Shield in an update shortly, it will work with Netflix, Amazon Video, Youtube, and probably Kodi and Plex soon if not already. If you have a Shield upgrading hardware is pointless, you can buy the new remote, or controller, or Nvidia Spot accessories and you will then have the exact same thing as is being released on the 17th Jan.

I will be watching Nvidia Spot to see if it will be any good in NZ.

When did that arrive? I thought it was 4K and no HDR yet.

edit. OK reading back, it seems update 3.2 brought HDR netflix. But 17th Jan will bring official HDR Amazon Prime for the first time. And is still the highest spec Android TV box on the market.

Since 3.2 yes, it's supported HDR10

I have the "old" Shield, won't be upgrading as it's the same internals anyway

FWIW I've been trying to convince Nvidia to bring the Shield to APAC. No joy just yet. Would likely be too pricey vs. Xbone/PS4 & wouldn't support the US-only game streaming service. Great hardware all the same, hoping it'll happen eventually.

You can actually join the game streaming service (I did using the free trial) - its just that with no local servers (and with me on VDSL) it is just too laggy.

And I must admit I did do some light gaming on my Shield and its OK....but I finally got a XBoxOne for Xmas (1TB for $350) and as you would expect it sh*ts all over the shield for gaming - as much because of a lack of titles as grunt.

Where my Shield kicks arse is as an SPMC player - where it eats 1080P / 4K / All HD Audio incl ATMOS and DTS:X etc - like no other player can. Add in integrated search + voice search + Netflix / YT etc and all within its lean back launcher and it is imo a superb media player.

Well it's complicated. I haven't been into a tech retail store for a while so I haven't been able to check if Sony have the NZ on demand apps on their Android TV based TV's. If they do then I would guess they have exclusives on them as there are no compatible nz ondemand apps in the play store.

Now, this is where the fun begins. I have previously installed tvnz and mediaworks ondemand apps. With a little fiddling they work, screen orientation apps are required to force the apps into Landscape. A mouse and keyboard are also required to start things up as the apps have no idea about remotes.

Skygo, doesn't need an orientation app to set landscape but a mouse is required.

I have pulled most apps from my phone or my Shield Tablet using appcloner, it has a setting for creating an Android TV tile so the app appears in the lean back launcher.

Otherwise Netflix, Amazon (coming soon) and BBC iplayer are installed by default if you set the language to English UK and turn off location services.

Geforce Now streaming of games is fine on my MyR 1Gbps service, the only network test I have issue with is jitter and using an American server was better than the Asian servers for me. The kids love all the Lego games and multiple player with two controllers keeps them both entertained for hours.

It is not a PS4/Xbone type gamer but it is excellent for lite gaming and any sort of media consumption.

Edit: Oh and the 16GB Shield can be in your home for about $320nzd, if you wait till the next sale (black Friday) it should be about $280nzd, maybe less depending on exchange rate.

Anyone able to provide a heads-up on the availability, suitability etc of the Shield? I need to replace my aging WDTVLive but the Shield may be a little over-qualified for my needs.

Thanks for reading.
