I was using IM apps and suddenly my phone just went black.  The phone has not been rooted.

I pressed the power and down button in a way, go to the menu and pressed down and the power button to ok it.  Did this 2x.  It just constantly flashed the LG start up screen forever and does nothing.

Any advice?

You were using it , and it shut down, then you went into the recovery menu??... Which option did you choose?

Why did you not replace the battery and just power on again?

Before I did take the battery out and back in but all it does is show me the LG splash screen and does nothing.

The step I did after, the menu is factory reset.

The first method with the LG Suite software didn't work, no connection it said.

The second method which was flashing a KDZ started but stopped.  Tried again this morning and it completes but when phone restarts it says optimising apps and after 8 apps it stops, restarts and does the same thing and stops after 8 again and repeats forever.  If you leave the phone for a while it says Kernel crash.

Which KDZ did you flash? I'd recommend doing a factory reset first from the recovery menu, then flash autoprime's Marshmallow 30B KDZ - http://downloads.codefi.re/autoprime/LG/LG_G3/D855/stock_partitions/30B

Make sure you download the correct variant (ie 16GB or 32GB version) as per your phone.

Also, if you're having issues flashing the KDZ, use LGUP with the 8974 DLL.

I have a dual D858HK, so I flashed the 20C and the 20D same thing.  Yes it is official firmware.

Factory reset does not work.  I get to the menu and I select and OK it to confirm.  The phone just reboots and reboots in a loop indefinitely.

Maybe a hardware fault.  After many restarts managed to boot into android itself, and it was all working fine, connected to WiFi and it crashed again.  I will see if the bank's credit card will honour it with their extended warranty.
