I purchased a J 5 Prime, and it is a nice phone. I had issues with reception of calls in marginal areas ( where my previous phone worked much better). I returned it to the store and got a Vodafone Smart Ultra 7 which had much better call reception in those same marginal areas.

Personally for someone less technically minded I would suggest the samsung, easier to use interface, you'll get better updates and there'll be a much better range of cases available for it.

If she were more technically minded, by all means the Huawei would be fine, but the OS interface is average without a custom launcher and the quality control isn't the best in the world.

My mum went from a MotoG to a Samsung J7 prime and she uses her phone so much more because she's not put off by the interface, it's a lot more intuitive. (I'm aware you can get custom launchers etc, but again more technically minded of those would go for that who want to tweak, not someone who just wants a functional phone straight out of the box.)

With the Samsung you've also got 'find my phone' function straight out of the box, which would beneficial if she ever loses it or needs it make a noise should be it be silenced and she drops it behind the couch!

I convinced a family member that a J5 prime was a good deal at $250. But as it turns out, they don't have 5GHz wifi! That's a crime in 2017.
