Due to breakages, my budget for next phone is seriously curtailed. Looking at a Xiaomi Redmi 4x from AliExpress for approx $140NZ, but if anyone has anything better sitting in a drawer for around the same price I might be keen. Requirements - any size, decent camera, good battery life, 16GB+, Skinny, more recent version of Android the better.. thanks

I just scored a free Samsung S2, rooted and Rommed it. The battery life is a little suss, but it's running Android 7.1.2.

Just an idea if you are adventurous

Any popular model will have custom Rom available. An old flagship is going to often be more usable than anything built to a tight budget.
