Yesterday I received 2 emails one after the other from the same sender to my Gmail account which I use the Outlook app with (because it's just better). Each email has a different embedded image in the message body.

When I open the first I see the correct image at the correct aspect ratio, and when I open the second I see the same image as in the first but the aspect ratio has changed to that of the image that is actually embedded in the second message body. I can switch between the messages and I'll continue to see the image of the first email in both with the different aspect ratios.

If I close the Outlook task then reopen it and open the second message first, it shows the correct image at the correct aspect ratio and then when I open the first email it shows the image from the second at the aspect ratio the image in the first message should be.

It seems to be mixing up the images depending on which you open first.

The sender is also using Gmail but from a desktop browser.

I've rebooted the phone a few times with no effect.

This is really most peculiar. Anyone got any ideas on what might be wrong?

Let me guess: you're using a Microsoft product? You do realise Microsoft Works is actually an oxymoron?
