Starting a couple of days ago, when I try to open Google Play on the P9 it quits after 1-2 seconds.

I've tried stopping the app, clearing the cache for Google Play Store and Google Play Service, restarting.

Play Store 8.0.73.R-all [0] [PR] 162689464

Play Services 11.3.02 (448-161239932)

Anyone else had similar? No idea what triggered it, there haven't been any OS updates / patches in many months.

I guess I'll follow the advice in this article, to go to www.APKMirror.com and download newer versions of both. There's point version upgrades for both Google Play Store and Services. Before I do that, can anyone verify this is typically a safe thing to do?

I fixed this by deleting the Google Play Store data - not just the cache. Settings -> Apps -> Google Play Store. Force close. Then go into storage and hit the "clear data" and "clear cache" buttons.

Ok, so that wasn't a long term solution. Today the same thing is happening.

Has anyone else has this happen? Is it safe / a good idea to replace the Google Play Store / Google Services on my unrooted P9? Is it even possible to do on an unrooted phone?

I see you removed cache and force stopped, but have you tried un-installing all updates for Google play and Google play services?

Possibly not helpful, but have you tried a factory reset?

Thanks @rscole86. I removed updates, rebooted, installed the updated Google Play Services, and it doesn't quit any more. I don't know how to update Play Store to the latest version though - I figure it'll eventually do that itself.

You will eventually be told to update it, try and use youtube app, or one of the drive apps and it will probably tell you your play store/services need to be updated.

Yeah play services updated immediately. play store doesn't think it needs to be updated right now. It seems to work though, so that's fine.

Google Play Store (the version that came with my device) is quitting again. Bugger.

Factory Reset could work, but that's a bunch of time to get everything working properly again.

You can check for updates to Play Store by clicking on the Hamburger Menu, clicking settings and then scrolling down to Play Store Version.

Pressing it will make the Play Store App check for updates.

You could also manually download a newer version from apkmirror, sometimes the version Google are pushing to your phone is far behind the latest version they have actually pushed elsewhere (probably to a small limited group)

What's a "Hamburger Menu"?

I thought about using APKMirror, I downloaded the latest version of play store. Not sure if that app is the problem or not, but when I clear data and cache for play services and store it works for a while.

Ok, in Google Play. That doesn't work if the app quits a second after it's launched. Oddly enough it still upgrades apps, and I can install apps from Google Play on the web.

Hamburger Menu

Clearly not a two patty burger, I'm guessing it's a single whopper without cheese.
