My Samsung Galaxy S8 has a recurring problem when set to Auto 4g/3g/2g that it loses connectivity to UMTS 3g and falls back to 2g also missing calls and texts.

Rebooting fixes the 3g connectivity.   Setting it permanently to 3g no auto switching seems to be the only workaround.

Anyone else had that problem?

Vodafone, 2 Degrees or Spark? I had a strange issue tonight where I didn't receive any texts for around 1/2 hour then suddenly they all came through at once.

Have you tried a hard reset of the S8?

could be an outside model, which would make sense.

Realistically, it sounds like the OP is dropping down on an edge of the tower, and then has a constant data utilization so the device doesn't try to switch back up to 3g/4g.

@matisayu, I'm on vodafone but it is not a vodafone issue other than I have a SureSignal device that it switches to for voice calls via 3g UMTS.

I've seen S8 text delays or loss attributed to the device's battery saver s/w switching off text services temporarily.

So your saying, Your issue is actually...

Your dropping down to 2G and not roaming back onto the suresignal? thus missing txts/calls due to low/poor signal?

@hio77, the data drops back to 2g and the 3g SureSignal is not recognised.  It's a standard global model SM-G950F supplied originally by Spark.   It was never locked and is fully qualified for the vodafone frequencies.

Re your second comment, yes, exactly that is the problem.  Since I've set it to 3g only I've had no issues.

As a test, could you disable your Mobile data. See if you return back to 3G overtime. (it may not be instant)

What i highly suspect your seeing, is you have a activate (in use/not idle) and thus the phone isn't priotisation switching to another cell.

@Alan2 It is running Spark software on the handset or have you upgraded using Odin to the VodafoneNZ software?

I have tried doing a manual network search and selection but that did not recover the 3g connection.  I had to restart to get it back.  I'll try setting back to the 2g problem state and turning off the data tonight when I'm not needing it.

Handset software is not created equal and carriers have different setups if I was you flash vfnz handset software from Sam mobile it's simple and I have never had an issue

Linux

Edit: Your issue might be the band scan used by Spark compared to VodafoneNZ
