This could be coincidence, but it seems very doubtful.

Two weeks ago, I got a Moto G5s, swapped my number to a new skinny Sim, put it in, and within an hour, received a spam call (answer and no-one's there). That was around mid-day, since then there have been several more, but all in the afternoon or evening.

I've had this number for a very long time, and been on skinny for quite some time.
Spam calls to this number are extremely rare
My memory is that the phone only had the initial setup completed, nothing else was installed.

I'm curious to know if anyone else has had the same. I'm finding it hard to accept it might be coincidence.

On a related note, the app "NoPhoneSpam" looks to be doing a good job rejecting the calls.

I know what you did last summer.

Co-incidence IMHO.

I probably get 2-3 spam calls a week on my 2 phones. This is down from the 10-15 or so per week I was getting when the UK spammers would call most days.

Nothing to do with the phone, everything to do with the number.  Just dumb luck.

How does this scam work? How do they get money from these calls?

The UK number calls I got were selling foreign exchange trading. I had one spend about 5 mins telling me what foreign exchange trading was with all my dumb questions before I told him that I didnt think it was very honest to use other countries money to make money when I could be using NZ money for it.

Nothing to do with the mobile, partner has one. It's the network.

For last weeks I've been getting fairly regular calls from a UK number - havent answered it yet, and they never leave a message.

I have had 1 of these 'missed calls' with a foreign number in 4 years on skinny.

Just a co-incidence I reckon.

I have been receiving these also, its just the latest scam.  What interested me was the Samsung Note 8 filtered and blocked these calls then I researched it and found the product called Hiya has been pre-installed by Samsung.

You can download the software for other phones from the 'Play Store' its called Hiya https://hiya.com

Hope this is of use.

I've had a lot of calls from UK numbers in the last few weeks. Its really annoying as I do have clients in the UK so can't just ignore the calls. It takes ages for anyone to answer, then its always a bright cheery Indian sounding girl who wants to offer me a chance to make money from home or some such.

I am not remotely interested in this and its a total time waster. I've tried to block the numbers but they are all slightly different. I dont know what I can say to them that stops them calling me as I'm plainly not interested. I've asked them to take me off their database, but the calls still come. Whats the best way of handling and reporting this, Commerce Commission?

Can complain to your phone provider but 9/10 theres not much they can do either as the numbers change etc.

CC cant do anything because its not a NZ business. And can guarantee, there isnt a legit database these guys are running from, just harvested numbers/ranges so its not a matter of getting removed from it.
