Samsung A3 2017

My phone told me it had a firmware update ready to install, about 215Mb.

Quite excited wondering if I was going to get something shiny.

I checked my current Android version which was 7.0, and Samsung Experience which was 8.1.

The firmware update completed, but neither of the software editions above have changed.

I’ve looked down the list of other Software Information items. The kernel and SE for Android are both from November and the Security Software Version is dated 1st Dec.

So what did the update do?

Interests: HTPC, Web App authoring.

Lmao December? It’s Mid February! I thought the security patch feature of android was supposed to be updated monthly? So android are still behind in their updates.

Why Android? Samsung is behind in their updates. Google, Nokia, Essential push updates every month.

It's not Android that's behind, it's Samsung. This is also the reason why I don't recommend Samsung devices, at least, non-flagship ones as they tend to be ignored. But then again, even my brand new Note 8 was lagging behind in the security updates by months (before I sold it off)...

Well taking into account the absence of ugly UI tuning and the speed Nokia rolls out updates it seems very close to vanilla Android. But Nokia has not released source code yet.
