Good morning,

With my HTC M9 battery on its way out the door I've been hunting for a new phone. My criteria, in no particular order:

~5" screen at 1080p. Anything with a higher PPI is a battery strain and I won't notice the difference.
SD card slot and modding support. Prefer Lineage OS support but rootable as a minimum.
Decent camera. I don't want top of the line, but clear and okay colour is fine for me.
Cheap. I'm getting sick of playing $800 for a new phone every ~2 years and I have seen the budget market improve a lot recently.
Large battery. I've always been flabbergasted that phones sacrifice battery size for thinness.

With those in mind, and looking outside the usual box of Samsung, LG, and traveling in China where the budget phone market has exploded, I settled on 1 of 2 phones: Meizu M6 Note and ZTE Axon 7.

I ended up deciding on the M6 and after waiting for "pb tech, their official nz distributor" to launch this phone, I bit the bullet and bought it on AliExpress for $230 including shipping.

So the phone has arrived and it's blown me away on nearly every metric.

Pros:
Awesome value. $230 isn't breaking the bank especially when you get flagship features.
The 5.5" 1920x1080 screen is clear and bright.
SD card slot plus in built root (note: if you update Flyme OS to the latest version you lose this feature)
Damn good battery life. Fully charged on Sunday night, maybe 4 hours SOT and 40 hours standby, and still 56% remaining!

Cons:
Not locally available. Not an issue to me.
Some weird design choices: fingerprint scanner on the front means 2 home buttons, some surprisingly lacks of customisation, some strange settings.
Limited dev support in terms of custom roms (this may improve with time)

Feel free to ask questions :)

I must say PB Tech's lengthy delay in their promised domestic sales of this phone has been disappointing. I too was waiting for them to do the needful but finally gave up and bought another phone elsewhere. Pity!

Had been watching for the pbtech release of that phone - presumably with full NZ 4g frequencies. But several months have gone by and no news. It reviews well elsewhere as well.

robjg63: full NZ 4g frequencies.

According to this we use B3 and B28 for LTE. On the sellers page it says the phone supports B3 but not B28.

I've always had full bars of 4G in Auckland - but that's to be expected. I don't travel out of the city enough for it to bother me anyway.

pb tech

Based on their pricing on 1+1 etc I would expect them to sell M6 for ~$400 at least. When I was in China it was advertised as CNY1099 which is actually slightly more than I paid for it in NZ from Aliexpress.

Yabanize: How is the camera?

Camera is not super important to me so I haven't used it much. I'd say it's on par with my HTC M9 camera (which was considered "okay" for a flagship camera).

My wife has the M3 and it’s in for repairs for the 2nd time to fix hardware issues. We’ve both been put off the brand by these hardware issues. The customised OS is not my cup of tea, if it were my phone I would have flashed it something else by now.

PBTech’s support has been fantastic, so still a fan of theirs.

I hope your phone doesn’t end up needing repairs.

hardware issues.

Mind sharing what the issues were with?

Yeah the stock OS is not fantastic, but I find Nova launcher and a few root tweaks make it totally usable. I don't use any of the stock apps so I can't comment on those. There don't appear to be any custom roms for the M6 yet but I am keeping my eyes out.

The home button twice has stopped recognising a gentle touch as a command to go back, it still recognises a firm push (click) to go to the home screen.

Also the screen has developed a red hue.

I always found the update cycle from Meizu to be pretty abysmal. I still have an M5 Note sitting around that is still running Android 6 and hasn't had a security update since Jan 2017.

Hi, what model is your M6 Note?

Is it 3Gb Ram, 32Gb Storage?

PB Tech have the model as described above now. $369.

https://www.pbtech.co.nz/product/MPHMZU6300/MEIZU-M6-Note-Dual-SIM-Smartphone-3GB-RAM-32GB-Sto

I want to use this with 2 sims. Is it 4G/3G in dual sim mode or 4G/2G as other models have been...

It is a Dual Sim standby phone, so it flicks back and forth from 4G/2G detecting activity.

Let me know if you know....

Hi Skyhigh,

Mine appears the same as the PB Tech one. More specifically it's the Meizu M6 Note M721H (H is the international version with more cell bands).

It's nice to see PB Tech has finally released it, though tbh the 50% markup seems pretty steep.

I can't comment much on the dual-sim features cos I don't need a second SIM, and I also use an SD card (which takes up one of the SIM slots). If there's anything I can check on the phone let me know :)

Cheers.

M6 Note is Dual SIM 3G, i.e. 4G/3G/2G SIM1, 3G/2G SIM2, so works with any combo of NZ SIMs.

Our variant is the M721L. Meizu built it with NZ in mind after (many) requests for a product with 700MHz Band 28. This was their first Band 28 device, and they completely redesigned the antenna from M721H. Software is cross-compatible between the two variants (and we wish we had 50% margin). :)

As this is Meizu's first product in a wee while to launch with full Google GMS certification there's some neat new stuff in the software, like the ability to switch between on-screen navigation buttons and Meizu's one-button mBack solution. Any questions, let me know.

Hi NikT,

I appreciate you taking the time to engage. Can you confirm if there are any other differences between L and H variants aside from Band 28 capability? (I have had full bars of 4G since I bought my H, but then I do live in Auckland).

Cheers.

Is that update availability or local carrier approval?
