Last week I came across Google Assistant, and installed it.... it worked ok, then after a few days I noticed the shortcut for it vanished but it was still running.

This past weekend I factory reset my phone, and now I cant get Assistant, "This app is incompatible with your device.".

Why not ? It worked fine last week.

There was a 'bug' that made the icon appear on my device apps page too. Even though it was always there. Lots of people reporting the same. It had a wear like icon that was just 'assistant'

That said, long hold of the middle button its still there. It updates without standalone install as long as 'google' app is kept up to date

Technically Google Assistant is not available in New Zealand. It is tremendously frustrating, because there is a whole ecosystem of software and hardware that is not available out of the box. The solution is simply to pick the otherwise identical "English Australia" language option when setting up a new device. English UK and English US are fine as well, it's just English NZ that is problematic. Your mileage may vary, some of my devices will retain assistant activation when switching back to English NZ and some will not. Some now will activate Assistant out of the box with English NZ, some will not. It is inconsistent and irritating. That said, Assistant is amazing and worth the hassle.

The 'app' for Assistant on the Play Store is just a shortcut to the long-press home key action.

Suffice to say Google's decision to hold off on officially releasing Assistant in English NZ is frustrating the likes of Bose, Sony, LG, and Logitech as well.

Great post, have just been trying to troubleshoot a Google Home issue with a Nexx Garage door opener. Their instructions say to open google assistant which I haven't been able to install!

Sounds a bit like Microsoft and their lack of Cortana in NZ. I know we're a small market but it can't be that hard to tweak Australian to Kiwi.

I had some issues myself with Google on my p9 lite. I eventually gave up and did a full reset of the phone only for it to happen again.

Turns out the best thing to do was clear the data & cache for Google Play Store via settings > apps.

There is also talk of a Google/Huawei bug but I've lost the link!
