I'm looking for a simple solution to being 'notified' on a phone that there is/are emails received on a email service (not Gmail), but are not downloaded to the phone or deleted from the service.

Presumably an app that just brings down Headers plus a 'leave on server' setting would do the trick, but which is best/simplest? wink

Standard Email on the phone doesn't have this much control as far as I can see.

Maybe I'm not understanding the question... but as long as it's not a POP mailbox you should be sweet as?

Nine is a bloody great mail app. Mostly designed for Exchange mailboxes, but you can stick an IMAP mailbox on it too. That way you can have it leave mail on the server as well as get the notification on your phone.

Edit: ohhh sorry.... you don't want to download to the phone. Why not though?

The thing is the OP doesn't want to download the messages, only to be notified there are messages.

The amount of emails could be quite high, require a full computer program (Outlook) to read and prepare replies, etc for typing and viewing.

Essentially, they just want to be advised of when an email has been received, and an idea of from whom, whilst they are moving around away from their main email receiving computer.  For example, away from home/office and expecting reply from someone, who sends email with attachments or long document … the phone owner can then send simple reply saying something like "will look when back in office, give me an hour" sort of thing.

You can turn off attachment downloads easy enough, and could restrict the date range for syncing if you don't want months/years of stuff.

I'm not aware of an email client that offers a sync headers only. You could try an integration service like PushBullet, IFTTT or MS flow? You'd set up a rule to the effect of when a message arrives, notify my phone.

But if you wanted to respond (even a short response) you're probably back to an email client anyway.

What about a service like Zapier? You could set a rule like 'new mail in mailbox trigger PushOver notification'. Zapier have an IMAP integration that would do that.

Pushover is a dam good notification tool!.. Just need to link it with your inbox.

Thanks all … someone suggested Outlook with 'Headers Only' invoked, or the K9 mail app that also has the appropriate settings available.

UPDATE:  Solved - the standard email client in Marshmallow 6 does in fact allow appropriate settings … they don't become apparent until the pop/imap and smtp settings are invoked and working.

So, I've set it to download Headers Only, Leave On Server, and frequency can be either by sync timing, or simply whenever I retrieve manually. The App also has an on/off slider so that too can be used.

Only thing we have to remember is to turn off the auto-retrieve on the office-based computer, but of course closing Outlook does this <s>.
