How the devil can I create a simple shortcut to a file on an external usb drive? I just want a home page link I can click on. I have been trying to do this with various file explorers but no luck. I don't want ES File Explorer on my system because of all the advertising bloat. Surely this can't be that hard to do?

ES file explorer is the only one I know that does it. The pro version doesn't have bloat apparently. I use an old version that's been re-signed so it doesn't want to be updated.

Solid Explorer will do this also, and I trust that far more than I trust ES File Explorer.

OK, thanks. I will give it a try.

Philosophical question: Why does Android make simple things so difficult?

It's not just Android, iOS does that too. At least with Android we have a choice but on iOS you don't even have access to local filesystems.
