Ive imported a new Nokia 8 Sirocco (not the 8) TA-1005 running Oreo 8.1 (Android One)- which i think is either from China or India. I'm a Spark customer. I discovered that it cannot make or receive phone calls while in the Wellington CBD. Oddly enough it *can* make calls in Karori.
It can receive and send SMS messages fine in both areas, and it can use mobile data perfectly fine as well in both areas.
However, when i force the phone to use 3G only, it *can* make/receive calls perfectly fine in both the CBD and Karori. Switch it back to 4G, and it goes back to no calls in the CDB but calls in Karori.
It sounds remarkably similar to this:

From what i understand, cell phones in NZ drop back to 3g to make calls anyway (as we don't yet have 4g calling VOLTE) - someone correct me if I'm wrong on this.
So, it seems there's some failure of the phone to automatically drop back to 3g in the wellington CBD to make/receive calls, but not in Karori. So there has to be some difference in cell equipment in the two areas.
My question is: is there anyway to improve the situation?
- Disable the VOLTE calling somewhere but remain on 4g data? (i cant find that option anywhere)
- Is there some secret menu somewhere i've overlooked (dialer code?)
- Live with 3g data, and upgrade temporarily as/when required?
- Buy an carrier pigeon and build a log cabin in the woods?
