My Messages SMS app (the Google one) just notified me about https://messages.android.com/

Given it a whirl. Does as you'd expect and as it advertises.  Allows you to send and receive SMS via a web page. SMS still goes via your phone so its just acting as a front to the messages app from what I can tell.

Pretty neat.  Now I just want something similar for phone calls and a PC headset!

I don't have the option to enable it on my Android Messages app, but my mate does.  Ripped off :)  Up to date too.  Oh well

This type of functionality has been around for a while with PushBullet and MightyText but for some reason or another, they never work as reliably as advertised. Sometimes wanting me to unlock my phone (although it is unlocked) etc.

@gurezaemon not really the same though with PushBullet, you'd need someone on the other end to have the same app.  With this new feature on Android Messages you just need the other end to accept SMS messages.  I wasn't aware of MightyText which looks cool, but $80 a year for unlimited messaging.  150 wouldn't be enough for me each month on the free tier.

@gehenna Maybe we're not on the same page here... I've just tried sending a text to myself from my wife's phone (that definitely doesn't have Pushbullet) and it arrived on my desktop without issue.

Pushbullet to the best of my knowledge installs on my desktop, and sends any notification (SMS, Viber, Messenger, etc.) to my desktop, where I'm supposed to be able to reply to it, but it doesn't always work as well as advertised. It is also supposed to handle file transfer, but this has not been that reliable either, so I tend to use "Send Anywhere" instead.

Yeah this is about being able to use the desktop browser to send an SMS to a phone number (and receive/view in the browser of course).

Just loaded it on  my Moto G4 Plus.  Looks good but not impressed with the group message  setup .  When I add a  person to the list the contact list jumps back to the top again and you have to drag the sidebar down again to find the next contact.  Looks like you can't save the group after the message sent.

updated to 3.3.044 a couple of days ago but don't have the feature.
Have similar functionality with kdeconnect though so not too worried about it not showing up yet.

I have been using Airdroid to do this for years.  Once I get the update though I think I will switch to messages.android.com

This would be a great way to build a communication system for a business. I wonder if there are any api's we can hook into.

It would make a fantastic warning system program.

Wasnt it supposed to allow rich text / media without MMS charges?
Or is that the next version of 'chat' ?

I got it a day or so ago and it works pretty well. But call me a luddite I still prefer Hangouts which I use with my children who are on both Android and IOS.

First it's free (my international SMS's are not free) and I like having the client available on a number of clients at the same time. So for Hangouts I can have it on Web and any of my phones/tablets simultaneously.

Staying in Wellington. Check out my AirBnB in the Wellington CBD.  https://www.airbnb.co.nz/h/wellycbd  PM me and mention GZ to get a 15% discount and no AirBnB charges.
