an interesting bug has arisen on my old faithful nexus 5.

on the app homescreen it used to show the last four used apps in the first line.

i recently had to reset the phone, now the first line apps are locked and don't change as apps are used.

is there a setting to restore operation to show recently used apps ?

Are you sure you were not using a different launcher? It may be a setting but I don't remember this an option in stock Android launcher - is it?

using original launcher that was on the phone - google now.

in the settings there's a toggle for "recommended apps" which turns the top line of app homepage on or off.

not sure there's a setting for that, but i'd try changing to a different launcher, then back to google now to see if that makes it work.

I think you're talking about "app suggestions" which is a line of four apps at the top of the app drawer (in Marshmallow)
It's not actually the most recently used apps but rather, based on your usage, apps that google suggests.
You can reset the data that google uses to put them at the top of the app drawer by switching off "suggested apps" then switching it back on. It will take a while of usage before you start to see any changes though.

before resetting the phone it was definitely showing the four most recently used apps.

use an app and the top four would change.

i tried a different launcher, then back to google, no effect.

from google re Marshmallow app drawer . . .

App Suggestions
Google predicts apps for the top row based on your habits at a given time of day.

Having a play with mine right now (nexus 5 + marshmallow) the top line definitely does not show the most recently used apps.
