We're heading down to the South Island for some touring and four wheel driving. I have a Nexus tablet mounted in the truck that has an OBDII connection with Torque as well as Waze and an NZTopo app.

I'd like to be able to record an honesty trace / bread crumb trail of where we go. Google maps doesn't appear to do this, and neither does NZTopo that I can find. Waze will, but there will be plenty of places that we're going that won't have reception, and Waze packs the hugest of wobblies if it doesn't have reception - refusing to even start if it doesn't have any, and often not reconnecting if it loses it during a trip. Fine if you have reception the whole time, but fundamentally useless if you don't.

I'm after any suggestions for android software that I can run that will record each day's journey as a file and allow me to export them later when we're home. Dosent necessarily need to show me where I am but would be a bonus if it did, and needs to work offline. Happy to pay a small amount for something that will do the trick.

Thanks.

Google used to offer My Tracks which would save into .kmz files that you can then import into Google Earth. This seems to have been replaced by Google Fit.

Wikipedia has some more info and AppBrain lists alternatives to try. foot-in-mouth Beebom lists Strava as an alternative. yell

Not sure what specific topo map app you're using, but I have NZ topo maps pro from atlogis, this can record your route offline. It works well offline - I use it all the time when hiking

Send us some pictures on your truck?
A mate who has an 80 Series has done what you are most likely about to do twice already!

Cheers

+1 for Atlogis New Zealand Maps Pro on Android. Tracks are recorded and can be exported in GPX, KML or KMZ formats.

Thanks very much - it seems I had a different version of NZTopo. Have upgraded to the Atlogis version and gave it a test run this afternoon - exactly what I was after.
